I ran across some expansion/penetration test data that I ran back in October 1991 and thought it may arouse some intrest.
Test medium was newspaper that had been soaked overnight in water and conducted at 25 yards:

Control load: .30'06; 180 Nosler SB; Velocity 2730 fps: Max. penetration-16.75": Diameter of slug-.467": Slug weight 109 grains.

.45-70; 307 grn. Lead Paper patched; Vel. 1944 fps: Max. penetration- 12.75": Diameter of slug- 1.08": Slug weight- 299 grs.

.45-70; 510 grn. Lead Paper patched; Vel. 1650 fps: Max. penetration- 15.875": Diameter of slug- .961": Slug weight- 510 grs.

Diameter of cavity at 12" for all loads was 1".
The 307 grain .45 boolit looked like a small bowl with the sides of the mushroom extending beyond the base, and no shank remaining. The 510 grain .45 boolit was a perfect mushroom with about 1/4" of shank remaining. Almost exactly like the ones I recovered from elk.
I would post pix but, I don't know how. -JDL

.............and prolly about what you expected, isn't it? I've mentioned a PP'd 405gr Lee I fired into a sandbank from my 577-450. Load was 38.0grs IMR3031 + dacron fpr 1250 fps. The boolit looked like a Faberge' Easter egg with the nose rolled right around toward the base. Look in the hole and see the base! About the size of a ping pong ball. That soft lead sure wants to hang together.
