Are they the same? I have a jar and it says 100% Pure Lanolin. but nowhere on the label does it say anhydrous.

IIRC from this gunboard, anhydrous is the more refined version. Felix or others who make lube would know.

Anhydrous means no water or H2O free.

Just about cost prohibitive to eliminate water entirely from lanolin without destroying the lanolin for our smokeless purpose. Anhydrous lanolin is lanolin that has been dehydrated as much as possible by using some kind of gentle operation. Prolly won't be far off saying no more than 15 percent water remaining. Some grades might have less, some more, depending on the origin of the wool and its "refining" technique. ... felix

So this 100% lanolin I have is probably not anhydrous, the jar must say Anhydrous on it?

IIRC anhydrous lanolin will be a dark honey color and about as translucent as vasoline, hydrous lanolin will be a creamy golden color and looks more like brownish mayonaise. Hope it helps you.

If it is stiff and sticky, clinging to everything it touches, and the jar says pure lanolin it likely is anhydrous. Is this pharmaceutical grade? If so it is anhydrous.

Thanks, tactikel, and 13 Echo, That is the lanolin I have, darker than vasoline and very thick and sticky.

Just curious, the only lanolin I could find in my town was at the drug store. It said anhydrous and cost $18.95 a pound. Is it this pricey everywhere?

I have three Lanolin products.
One is Anhydrous Lanolin,USP very yellow in color will not pour.Second is Lanolin Hydrous, white in color. it `s contains: Lanolin USP and purified water USP.Third is liquid Lanolin "100% pure".A light amber color pours like cold honey.
I use the liquid lanolin for case and bullet lubes. Horace

Here is a good place to buy lanolin. I shared an order with friends to minimize shipping per lb:

http://www.thesage.com/catalog/FixedOil.html

Scroll down until you come to lanolin.

I have bought from these people several times and get an excellent product.

Locally, I could only find it in a 2-ounce tube labeled as Nipple Cream, for ten dollars.

On a related note, ladies in need of soothing might get better service from bag balm...at five bucks per pound.
