Hi .

Anybody know what the twist rate is in one of the newer Winchester Legacy's , in 38-55 cal. ?

Just wondering what the heaviest bullet is that it might stabilize. .

thanks

It was/is 18 to use 250 grainers or less. ... felix

Joe,

I have a legacy 94 in 38-55. I use lee's 255 gr mould, but I removed the bevel base on it with a sharp knife and patience. I don't care for bevel base boolits and the mess they make in the lube/size process. With the recommended trim to length of 2.075 and seating the boolits to utilize the crimp groove I was finding occasional feeding hangups. I trim all my brass down to 2.055 and now have no problems feeding with this boolit.

I use 17.5 gr of surplus SR4759 powder and just enough dacron to fill the rest of the space without compressing the dacron and WLR primers. Velocity is in the 1600 fps range and groups run about 1" at 50 yards if I do my part. This rifle is a ton of fun to shoot, is accurate and doesn't have a punishing recoil.

Thanks for the replies .

I have one on the way ,and thought i would get a jump on ordering a mould for it .

Then i did some more thinking (???? ), and thought i better slug the bore first.

Still interested in finding out what bullet seems to work best in these rifles .

Thanks

Joe .

Lyman makes a 249 grain plain base bullet mold. It stabilizes fine in my Winchester High Wall with the same 1:18 twist.

BUT, the most accurate bullet in my rifle is the RCBS 312BC that drops from my mold at 320 grains. It's a bore rider with a long bearing surface.
