Does anyone know what size the front and rear action screws are for the 98 Mauser?

They look like maybe 1/4-20x 3/4 and 1/4-20x 1 1/2.

Thought about picking up some socket head cap screws from my buddy at work.

1/4-22 if I remember correctly, will have to double check.

Must be 1/4-22. I just tried 1/4-20 and 1/4-28 and even tried a M6-1.0 and none worked.

Old gun threads are a puzzlement.

They are 1/4-22 and taps and die's are available from Brownell's as well as bolt blanks [you thread them].

Jantz Supply in Oklahoma has the screws in stock.

Last I checked they were cheaper than others.

The Swedish Mauser has the same screw threads. 1/4-22 Whitworth 55 degree thread. American thread is 60 degree. While the 60 degree may fit it won't fit tightly in a precise manner. You do risk stripping the hole if you over-torque with a 60 degree screw.

I'm not entirely sure the 1/4-22 taps and dies sold by Brownell's are 55 degree Whitworth.. yet. I'd like for someone who knows the difference to verify. That die size is terribly difficult to find in a 55 degree Whitworth thread.

Dutch,

Thanks for mentioning the whitworth thread form. I was getting ready to post that as I went through this about a year ago with new bolts for one of my mdofied 98 target rifles. It was a chore to find the correct threads that would correctly tighten and stay tightened.

Old thread, but I need a tap to clean the threads on the rear tang.
