If looking for something with the least smoke. I would say Brownells Marvelux. It dose seem to promote rust on the pot though.

All I've ever used is the butt end of a burned down candle. Many like saw dust but I haven't tried it.

What Waksupi said, a little smoke, but not much.

Decide what you're trying to accomplish by fluxing, then realize that your best option will probably be the dry stick mentioned by waksupi. Stir sticks, such as given away by paint stores, work great.

I don't mind a little smoke and flame. They just liven things up a bit. The best method I've found is to clean my melt with a little parafin, which will smoke and then ignite. This cleans the melt like nothing else I've tried. I then follow up with a good stirring with a wooden paint stick, which I repeat throughout the session to reduce the any oxides that have formed back into the melt.

I stir with those cheap disposable wooden chopsticks that come with take-out.
Every time that the wife orders some I get her to ask for extra chopsticks.
Great for fluxing, cleaning, etc. - best part - cheap (that's me!).
