Not sure I would do it, as I have taken quite a few deer here in Michigan with a .410 White ML. 40 caliber seems like overkill. I assume we are talking snowshoe rabbits or something of similar size??

How much will the bullet weigh ?

I'd look for the sabots in 50 cal that you can shoot 45 cal boolits in. Use a 185gr 45cal boolit and push it with 50gr ffg and you should have a nice rabbit gun.

they do make a sabot for the 50 cal that you can shoot 357 dia boolits in. May want to check that out too.

Why spend/waste all that money on sabots?
Go get yourself some .50 cal. roundballs and some patches, FFg or FFFg black powder and go to the range and start at about 20 grs. and work up until you get some good groups at 25 yds.
round balls = about $13.00 per 100
lubricated patches = $5.00 per 100

A little time with a round ball mould and the cost comes down even more, could be just the time invested if you are using scrape pure lead. Strips of pillow ticking, either new or recycled, lubed with your favorite concoction are much cheaper that store bought. Cutting the patch at the muzzle generally gives better accuracy. I have a knight .50 that will shoot through the same hole at 25 yds. using a 35 grain load of Goex FFg.
