I was loading up some .30-30's this afternoon and opened my last can of H-4831. What's this rust looking stuff in the powder? I smelled it and it certainly didn't smell right, so I dumped it into an old Whipped Topping container. Rats, some brown at the bottom too! Knowing it had gone bad, I spooned some up from about mid depth and found some clumped together and oozing a bluish liquid. I dumped it on the ground, put a match to it and had a nice little fire for a short time! I'm gonna miss that last old can of mil-surp powder as it was in the first batch I bought over 40 years ago. :-(

Good thing it was the last of the batch. Imagine how you would have felt if you bought it 40 years ago and just got around to using it for the first time....

I had to dump mine about 4 years ago. Well it was only a couple pounds at .65 per pound when I got it. Amazing they could make high quality powder during the war and not today.

In 1962 I bought a 100lb keg of 4831 from Shawnee Mission KS. I'm still using it and it has held up fine. Thanks to my refrigerator powder magazine.

Whoah. I thought they were going to stop making it.
I am getting down to the bottom of my drum. Whew!
