I have a 1949 336 which had the stock crunched in the shipping porcess.
I prefer the original stock, serial numbered with the receiver.
The stock and the internal contours can be repaired, but to do it right is NOT going to be fast or cheap ... we're talking furniture restoration....
In the interim, I tried a stock from a mid 70's 336 and it appeared mostly correct dimensionally, but the curviture of the old receiver's lower tang seemed several degrees different. This being said, it appears the only recourse is restoration of the original wood.
Can other folks with a number of these guns give offer some counsel / comment / recommendation?
