I have a 1949 336 which had the stock crunched in the shipping porcess.

I prefer the original stock, serial numbered with the receiver.
The stock and the internal contours can be repaired, but to do it right is NOT going to be fast or cheap ... we're talking furniture restoration....

In the interim, I tried a stock from a mid 70's 336 and it appeared mostly correct dimensionally, but the curviture of the old receiver's lower tang seemed several degrees different. This being said, it appears the only recourse is restoration of the original wood.

Can other folks with a number of these guns give offer some counsel / comment / recommendation?

The older Marlins had a different size lower tang. Both in length and in thickness. Replacement stocks are out there if you go that route. Check out Gunstocks Inc and Precision Gun Works. One of those places showed some pics of the old/new lower tang and how they differ.

I think there's a stock maker at marlinowners.com. FB
