I'm about ready to trash this rifle or part it out. I can't get it to shoot anything without 3 out of 5 tumbling. I put a new crown on it and it didn't improve so I took the wood off and chucked the barrel/action up in my lathe and counterbored it for about 1". Still doing the same thing. I may have to rebarrel it to 7mm or try to find a good 7.65 barrel. The lands are a little rounded but no pitting. I have an Mosin that had a sewer pipe bore that I counterbored and it at least doesn't tumble bullets. I've even tried jacketed surplus and .316-.317 diameter cast bullets. Time to put it out of it's misery. Mark

Have you slugged the barrel yet to get an actual interior diameter measurement? .316-.317 bullets may still be too loose. I've seen old Argies with .318 and .320 bores before.

It slugged out at .315 x .310. Thats why I was trying the bigger bullets. I can't get larger ones to chamber. I tryed to chamber a .318 bullet but the neck diameter was too large. Mark

A little more detail. You got the Fat 30 boolit? Try it cast of WW, GC'd and lubed with 19 gr of SR 4759.

I'm sizing dowm .323 diam bullets and they are GC'd. I've tried 3 different types of lube. I've also tried some .319 bullets sized down also. Tried about 4 different type of powders. I don't use SR 4759.

OK, well try some WW or less hardness boolits at 0.316" diameter, if it will take them, with a top book load of Unique for the boolit weight your useing. The Argie carbines shoot very well, even if they don't look so good. One of mine is WELL used, but shoots under 2 MOA still.

If any of y'all need help with your 1891 loads, I've got a bunch of .311 surplus bullets, 174gr. Can send a few for testing if needed.

arclight,
thanks for the offer but .311 is way too small for this carbine. .316-.317 bullets tumble.
