I have always been a adamant IMR reloader and am looking for a cheaper powder since I have been doing a lot more and more shooting lately. I have always heard of surplus powder but when I looked at it I just don't know what to look for. How do I figure out what I can use, and where do I find the data?????

I reload for:
7mm-08 IMR 4350
7mm Rem Mag IMR 4350 OR 4831
.270 IMR 4350 OR 4831
.30-06 IMR 4350
.257 Weatherby Mag IMR 4350
45-70 IMR 3031 OR 4198
.450 Marlin IMR 3031 OR 4198
.380 ACP WIN 231
9MM WIN 231
.38 Special TITEGROUP
.357 Mag TITEGROUP
.45ACP TITEGROUP OR WIN 231
.45Colt WIN 231

IMHO
You are kind of to late to get involved with most of the surplus powders. Most of them today are priced very close to the Store bought canister powders, such as IMR.

10 years ago you could buy almost any volume of surplus powder and bullets, from pulled down ammo that was part of the base closing program during the Communist Clinton administration. This supply is rapidly dried up.

IMHO: at today's prices if you don't already have several jugs of a known lot of surplus powder you are taking a gamble that it will even be close to what you need, as the labels say it is your responsibility to work up loads.

Good luck, and shoot often.

I second the opinion that you would get more savings from buying what you shoot in 8 lb kegs than current surplus.

It figures I'd be late. The 8 lbers have went up in price around here, not much of a savings anymore.
