Here is a 100 yard group I shot with my 1917 enfield. 311407 group buy mold and 13.5 grains of Promo. (red dot).1580

I have heard many claims of verticle stringing, but I dont' get it even at 200 yards.

I'm a bit of an M17 perv, what sort was the rifle used above? I have two Remington M17s in original condition, one with an old Parker (pre Parker and Hale) target peep sight and two Eddystones which were converted to 308 long range rifles by their previous owners. I have a P14 Eddy as well. Big heavy clunkers, but they are invariably accurate and I have always liked them. One day I will find a Winchester M17 in excellent order ( one day I will find a Winchester M17 in any sort of order!), help! I cannot rest until I have a smick Winchester M17, even if I have to restore it! :-D Mick.

Lately I've been shooting 11.0 gr. Red Dot in 30-06 with a 120 gr FNGC from MM. I don't have any problems with vertical stringing. The load will consistently ring a 6"X6" gong at 200 yards. This is with 2 different 03-A3's and 2 different Garands. Those that claim vertical stringing might have rifles that prefer a different powder.

4fingermick,

Its a Winchester. Controlled feed. Issiue sights and trigger although I massaged the trigger. The barreled action was given to me a looong time ago. Some one else gave me the stock. I took off the barrel bands and "extra" wood. I only use it as a shooter. I have had more fun with this gun than most of my others.

About 10 years ago I tried cast in it. I was getting 8" at 50 yards with keyholing. I now know that sizing the boolits to .308 was the problem. Now I am geting 8" at 200 yards with the same load as above.

What I like about this load is I am buying 8 lbs Promo for 79.95 and the mold is a 6 cavity group buy and I load em on my Dillon. I can shoot all I want with little work or expense. Great practice load.

This is the "expected" performance of one of my SC 03A3's, as-issued, with "generic loads" (not tuned for the individual rifle) of 2400:

I think you can read the data.

This is what happens in the same rifle with 13 grains of Red Dot, all shots fired with the elevation slide on 750:

Not only is it strung out vertically, it's just a piss-poor group.

To me, any 100 yard prone group over 2" is unsatisfactory. If you are happy with Red Dot performance in your rifles, by all means use it.

Resp'y,

Nice group,

:) I will load those boolits by the boxfull of 50 and have a blast with em. 3 1/2" is minute of Clay bird. :)

I also have 3 young adults that like to shoot that gun. At 25 yards, it really doesn't matter. We can still hit a horse chesnut, golf balls, bowling pins or soda cans.

Also respectfully,
David
