HI,
Was woundering if anyone had tried out any of the surplus powders in the 220 swift. Am using the 60gr. & heavier bullets.

I would suspect that a slow lot of WCC 846 would be the best bet. WCC 844 is a bit fast as you'd only get maybe 75% load density (and being a ball powder this is usually not good). The IMR 7383 surplus would probably work in it too although with less than normal velocity.

Guesstimates as starting charges: (as always with Surplus)

Wcc 846 35gr with a hornady 60gr bullet (Should give 3300fps from 20" barrel at 50,000 PSI )
IMR 7383 - fill the case to the base of the bullet and weigh it, reduce by 15% to start.

I think the powders you want are pretty much gone. If you can find some WC852 slow lot(H450 speed-47-287) should be great with 60 gr and up, and special ball or wc 852 fast lot or wc852 sold as H380 speed should be a good one too. Good luck finding some! Scot

HI,
Have used IMR 4198 not the best powder, ok results, hard to load.
Also have been using IMR 4350 , better powder but hard to load.
Have not got great results w/ eather.
Am looking for a ball powder, at hopefully a cheaper cost than comercial cannester powders.
Am all out of the 4198 .
Am useing HEAVIEST mil. surplus bullets , from HI TECH.

I would use a modern commercial powder for consistent cleanliness, because 22's can really appreciate it, especially for full case applications. ... felix

HI,
THANKS FOR THE IMPUT.
Iwant to move away from the 4350 as it is so hard to load down that skinny neck.
Was hoping to find a ball powder better suited to the 220 swift.:Fire::Fire:

Have you tried 4064 in the Swift? With the 60 gr it gives slightly less velocity than 4350, but it is more accurate than 4350 in my rifle. I bought a can of H414 a couple of months back to use with in my Swift as it is supposed to give higher velocities with 60 gr and heavier bullets than 4064 and 4350. H414 is a nice ball powder and measures nicely, I just haven't had time to load any up yet, as its deer and pig season and I have been working with my deer and pig rifles.

Try Reloader 15 and IMR 4064. If the barrel likes Reloader 15 you're really going to see something.

I use h380 powder in my 220 swift. Meters very well, and it's tough to argue with 1/4" groups. I am shooting moly coated 50 grain hornady v max's over a healthy dose of h380 with winchester primers (check your manual and work up accordingly).

My mistake, I should had included 380 in the above, good catch, but then again only if the barrel likes it. If it does you can place it right up there with anything.

I much like H380 in the 22-250, measured wonderfull and shoots great, and I don't generally like ball powders, I think I would start with H380 in the Swift and maybe consider H414/WW760 and also give Ramshot Hunter a try.

There was a surplus powder with the same burning rate as Hunter, Accurate's DP85, but it's all been bought up now. I use it in the 7.5x55 with j-words

I have used 43g of Win 760 with 55g Nosler Ballistic Tip projectiles and Magnum primers for a chronographed velocity of 4300fps - in a Ruger M77V - which has lots of free bore.

This load also produces very close performances with a 55g Sierra soft point projectile - both have similar ballistic coefficients.

The load is accurate - usually 0.5 - 0.75MOA.

My rifle produces a considerably reduced performance with 60 grain projectiles - regardless of the many powders that I have tried.

I have been using a 220 Swift over 30 years.

dont have a 220 swift anymore but when i did i used mostly 414 and 4064. I dont use alot of surplus in my bolt varmit guns. In them im looking for accuracy and dont mind spending a bit more for powder. Not like the ars that get thousands of rounds through them in the varmit guns i shoot less and want the best. Not that surplus cant be just as accurate but its alot less consistant lot to lot and you allways take the chance that once you find that majic load you run out and need more and get a differnt lot and have to start all over or cant even get that powder anymore.

HI,
I understand the run out /different lot problem.
This is somewhat solved when you do not impulse buy anything.
Do your research 1st, as I am doing here, save your pennies, then buy 4-8 , 8lb. jugs.:Fire::Fire:

This is not hording.

Boom Boom, another vote for H414. Always had good luck with it in both the swifts I have had. Excellent velocity and a good shooter. Mike

HI,
Finally got to go shooting , 1st. time this year.
Had switched scopes on my 220 swift so took it , my 44 red hawk, & my 22.
Got the 22o sighted in at 50yds. but the 100yd. range was reserved all day long. So could not shoot there. Sucks, Oh well I guess it will give me a excuse to go shooting next week.

HI,
Just checking back to see if anyone might have used surplus powders, in the last few mo. or so?
I still have to trim all my empties, & other issues like work have changed my priorities.
