The neighbor was over as I was putting brakes and rotors on his truck. We was talking rifles and shooting and I was telling him how much fun I was having messing with the grandsons 336 30/30 and cast. He said he had a model 30 AS in the closet with 6 rounds down the tube. He had it for years I checked 1994 and 200.00 later guess what. Now I gots my own turdy turdy to shot cast with. I just got to stop talking guns with people.[smilie=b:

Great deal!
That's the best way to find the best deals!
Wish I had neighbors like that- heck, wish I could find deals like that!
I gotta work too hard at it, but occassionally I fall over one somewhere- usually when I don't have the money! :drinks:

So did you get the box with 14 rounds left in it too?

Enquiring minds want to know...

Did'nt even ask him if he had them. It still has the tested sticker on the bottom of the fore arm. I will get some pictures up soon. Its not a fancy model , plain wood with a few little dinks I can steam out. The blueing got a few little slight rust marks. I buy them to use anyway and this is going to be put to work.I am still up in the air on sighting, I will work the opens first then see about a peep or single power scope. I never tried a red dot may try that. At 52 I came down with type 2 Diabetes ( family thing ) 2 years ago and my eyesight is constantly changing. I am building a new flinter that it seems I am going to have to move the rear sight further out then my flinter I am shooting now. I would like to use this rifle for my woods hunter with lead. Change up from my 25/06 and 30/06's.:lovebooli :castmine: Boon

Go back and ask- that stuff is EXPENSIVE now. That, and having the extra brass never hurts!

You rescued your neighbor from the burden of keeping that fine rifle locked away in his closet. Now you can bring it out for some fresh air and sunshine. Everyone's happy but I think you'll be the happiest of all.

Yes it is almost new, I seen him last night and he told me he had won it in a raffle years ago. He loaded up the mag and shoot six shots then put it away as he is a bolt man. He is a 7mm mag and 35 whelen type of guy. His lost my gain, to be honest I was never a lever type guy untill I started loading up cast practice loads for the grandsons 336 that his great popop gave him. (just turned 6 yesterday) I really want a 45/70 but this will do for now, untill I come across a deal. I just lost my job and out off work for the first time in 35 years so this will be a cheap plinker. ( barter system) I just got a group buy mold 311041 Lee six banger. I am ready too go.:cbpour: Boon

Nice find!!! Looks like someone put the rear sling stud in the Bullseye. I like it when they do that, doesn't leave a nasty hole in the stock. I've replaced several of the trademark bullseyes that had either fallen out or had swivel studs screwed in them.

Try that 311041 with about 19 gr of 4198 or 4227. If it shoots like my 336SC you can bust half litre water bottles "looking at you" @ 100 yd.

I don't think that version had the bulleye in the stock. Only the "fancy" walnut stocks get those, IIRC. This is a less expensive version- but a good one, none the less. All the metal parts are the same (except the sights- esp. the front).

Charlie is correct, no bullseyes, and the front sight is dovetailed right into the barrel, i.e. no ramp.
Beautiful find, I had mine for years, fun to plink with. I'd say you got a quality deal there.

Well today with have a directors meeting at the club, so I loaded up some 311041's sized to .309,gas checked and lubed with whats left of my NRA lube over 8 and 9 grains of Unique to test function and loads. I am not really working accuracy yet. It is supposed to be a balmy 42 degrees today .:bigsmyl2: Boon I will take some pictures.:redneck:. ( I am taking this and Moe's (grandson Jesse) 336 scoped also.)

For future experimentation, my 30AS likes them at .311 diameter. These are great budget rifles, I actually chose mine over the 336 because of the dovetail front and lack of white line spacers. To me it was cleaner, more what I thought a lever action should look like. You made a great deal on this one!

You can drop back a grain, or so on the Unique too. All the 30-30's I've tried over the years liked 7-7.5 grains pretty well........ save some powder too. :D
