Making 22-250 brass Question

What is the best cartridge to use for forming 22-250 cases?

I believe the 22-250 is the 250 Savage ( 250-3000 ) necked down to 22.

Unless you just got to....buy some decent .22-250 brass and be done with it.

Had a friend way back when who bought a .22-250. This was in the days when there was no .22-250 brass but he had a lot of FA and LC .30/06 Match.

One Saturday, we made 50 rounds of .22-250 and I mean it was an all day job and I'll never do that again. Several neckings, trimmings and reamings on each one. We did it and they looked all right but it's better to bite the bullet and spend the bucks and get some factory.

Besides, you need a bunch of tools....even with .250 Savage./beagle

I have 40 rounds of once fired brass for 22-250 which I have no use for....
what have you to trade?....I need 7mm, 30 cal al 35 cal gas checks in that order

Walmart has Win bricks of 50 22-250 for under $45. Why would you waste precious hours of your life to make a less than perfect copy of something that is that cheap?

+1 for Beagle. I have a set of RCBS .22-250 forming dies which you can use to recycle .243,308,.270,.30-06 into .22-250, in short I would rather have a root canal. Spend the time search for some good once fired, or trades here are always a possibillity.

I don't have any gas checks. Never use them on pistol boolits and haven't cast for rifle yet.

You can make them out of 308s, but use a good case forming/sizing lube.

new 22/250 brass is a good bit cheaper than new 250 savage brass .. far as buying formind dies go .. you sure can buy a lotta brass for the price of dies

I do it from bulk Reminton .30-06 and .35 Whelen brass.

Do it if you want too, there are indeed some advantages to such reformed cases.

There will always be those who tell you the better way is not to do it at all but that wasn't your question, was it??

OK, Maybe I'm just thick between the ears. Why oh why would one spend X+ hours making something that can be purchased so cheaply? All "made up" brass is going to be mis-marked and thick in the neck unless reamed. I work, and assume all of the rest of you do too. So reloading time and shooting time are rationed. So, I weigh the pros/cons of forming brass and choose to buy it instead. Am I whacked?

Uh fellows 250 Savage brass is a LOT harder to get than 22-250 and I have to make my 250 brass from 22-250. Please if you are thinking about necking down 250 Savage post here for a trade.

I have made it from 243. Just run it through the 22-250 fl size die, trim to length. and thin the necks. I like knowing I can do it if need be, but for reasons stated, I don't do it for brass, and I don't want mismarked brass around as we have too many different calibers and shooters to be safe. I have a lot of LC 30-06 brass that has been necked and trimmed to 25-06 that is stored in an ammo can. I will not load it as we have plenty of factory brass, but some day, who knows?

omgb, sometimes you want thicker case necks so you can turn them for minimum clearance in a loose chamber. I've got a couple of dozen .22-250 cases that were made from military .30-06. Somebody had lots more free time than I do and I've had it long enough that it may have been formed before factory cases were available.

on that note, I"ve been forming 308 from -06 as of late. I prefer the thick necks as they fit the nato chamber in my rifle much better and provide better accuracy(IMHO)

Once you get the process down, you can be amazed at how fast you can actually reform brass.

I can do roughly 150-175 in 2 hours. start to finish, ready to load.

I"d rather spend 2 hours in the mancave than spend 30 bucks on new 308 brass.

I started shooting the 22-250 while it was still a Wildcat and we had to make out cases. We used 250 Savage cases. They can be made from just about any case with the 30-06 sized head.

More than likely when you get the cases formed you will need to outside turn or inside ream the necks to keep them from being too thick.

I just got back from Walmart. i bought a 40 pack not 50 of win 47 grn 22-250 for $27 and change.
