Went to the range today to shoot my sharps & old krag. They have had a stevens 325b sitting in the used rack for a while, so I looked at it again & it followed me to the house. It has the spoon bolt handle & someone d&t'ed it.
They drilled 2 holes in the front reciever ring then used a weaver 1 piece base, kinda odd looking but works very well. I took some "j" word factory rounds with me & the last shot was 1 inch high & dead over the X at 100.
It had a craked & chipped butt plate, stock is half a$$ refinished, & a 4 power bushnell scope. Now it has a nice 1 inch black pad ( lenght not recoil), a k3 weaver ( el paso), but still a half a$$ stock finish. Another down the road project.
Price out the door, after tax = $174.99.

I are a dummy, it's a 30-30. Barrel seems to be in very good shape, ran a wet patch with hoppes, then dry ones only showed powder. I'll try some copper solvent later, weather going bad on us tomorrow.
The trigger surprized me, it's got a little slack, but a smooth letoff & only about 4lbs. It doesn't look like the trigger group has ever been apart so I guess I really got lucky. It beds down in the stock well also. Ought to be a good cast boolit gun.

6.5 Mike;

Good score on the Savage. It should be great cast bullet rifle.

I didn't know there was a range or a place that sold guns in Milton.

Thanks guys. Cleaned a little more between rains today, outside metal is in real good shape. normal wear, no dings or real bad spots.
Barrel slugged .300/.3075, looks like my lee 170 or 185 molds should work well as both try to engrave at the muzzle. Anybody try pp'ed in one of these ? I'll be damned if I'm going to pay the price they want for gas checks.
Next to get the chamber oal & see what I can do from there, may just have to go with what will fit the magazine.
elk hunter, couple hock shops here but no range. I've been going to styx river in ALA. Really nice folks.

It sounds like ya done real good . I've never heard of anyone having a bad problem with the performance of Savage bolt rifles in that caliber . I had one and it ran real well , I kept it untill I ran into another thirty-thirty bolt rifle .

Got the weaver base off last night & found bubba has been here. Mount holes are just enough off you can see it. When I got the back screw loose the mount would rock up & down. The dummy had bottomed the screw out but not tighten the mount.
Went & looked in my inside goody box & came up with a redfield 1 piece base I'd gotten at a show awhile back. I really got lucky & the screw holes almost match.
I'll have to do some creative fitting but I'll make it work. Someone had enlongated the back hole on the redfield mount just enough it matched the back hole on this one, just had to open it up a little. Do'nt have but a couple bucks in it.
On a good note, the chamber OAL is 2.732 & the magazine is 2.633, not a real big jump, so it just might work with pp'ed. I'll make a couple dummies & see how they feed. Ran some "bore tech" copper solvent through the barrel, nothing. And i'm not getting much powder fouling either. I'm still very happy with my new (to me) toy.

23, welcome, you did real good at that price. Your's looks like it still has the factory finish, or a very nice re-do. I haven't had a chance to work up a heavy load, but 7 grs of unique & the lee 160 gr tl makes a great plinking load & fireforms the cases well for neck sizing.
Had to give up on the redfield base, emptys didn't want to clear it on ejection, went back to a weaver, no problem. Got the stock redone, barrel sights on, had a old whelen 1" sling (it came with sling rings) to use, now I need to put a scope on it & leave it on. It has shot well with 3 different ones. This little rifle is almost as much fun as my 03A3 to shoot. [smilie=s:

Link23.... Here are some loads I worked up years ago for my Springfield 840 which is the cheap version of the Savage 340. These are from an 18" barrel so your velocity should be a bit more. All targets are at 100 yds except where noted. First two loads have taken deer & hogs:
Lyman #311284FN - 210.0 grs, WW/Pb, 1:1, 33.0 grs #4350, CCI 200 primers, Rem. cases.1786 fps. 1 1/2" group.
Old West. #310195 - 195.0 grs, WW - 34.0 grs #4350, 1871 fps. 2.1" group. My favorite load.
Lyman #311291 - 187.0 grs. WW, 33.0 grs #4350, 1895 fps, 2 1/4" group.
Lyman #311291 - 187.0 grs, WW, 33.0 grs #4831, 1732 fps, 1 1/4" group. Consistantly most accurate load. Have fired several 10 shot groups that have stayed within this group size.
Lyman #311291 - WW, 9.0 grs Unique, 1200 fps. Very quiet load. At 25 yds 5 rounds in one ragged hole. At 50 yds about 1.0". Never fired it at 100 yds.
Lyman #311492 WC - 93.0 grs, WW/Lino, 1:1, 4.6 grs Unique. Very quiet load. Have not chronographed this load. 10 rounds in under an inch at 25 yds.
Targets were fired with receiver sight & replacement Patridge front sight.

I just brought the twin to yours home. Will go clean it, but doesn't look like it has been shot much. It has a rubber pad. The stock is 28 inches of wood. Is that the original length?

I have some 311041 flat nose loaded with 18 grains of 4198 I will try in it tomorrow.
