I am thinking of getting a Taurus Modle 66
in 357 Mag, with a 6" barrel, and was wondering if anybody
on here has one? If so, how accurate is it,
and what have you found to be the best plinking
load, and full load.
Thanks for any information.

I've got one of those and it's singly the most accurate handguns I've got although I have no cast data for it. Very easy to shoot and dead reliable. Got a new Ruger Vaquero I"m just dying to shoot if it ever warms up a bit. Been a year or so since I've shot the Taurus but it is a nice gun. Got it in a divorce sale for $200 in stainless.

Have a 66 with a 6'' barrel. I love it and it loves Keith's 358429 with 6 gr Unique and 14 gr 2400 (caution its over max , work up to it .5 gr at a time from 13).

Thanks guys, that's what I was looking for.
I just think I'm going to have to buy it now.
Art,
Boy, you got a super buy on yours.
Good luck with your new Vaquero, I was thinking of
one of those also. One gun at a time, I guess. :O)

Get it. I've got a Taurus Tracker in .357 and it is one of the best guns I own. After my .45, it is the gun I'd reach for. Some have had bad luck with Taurus. In my personal experience, my Tracker has been nothing but fantastic for me. Works well with both jacketed and cast (if I do my part).

I had a Taurus 357 years ago and it was one of the most accurate nice pistols I have ever shot. Like a darn fool I traded it in for a Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag which shot for beans an other reason I love Rugers so much. NOT.

Your choice, I stop at 13 in my Smith 66.

Hey Archer just pulled mine out of the safe and rubbed it down, it's a 669 6" barrel. Did some research but can't seem to find the major differences except for the 6" barrel. Any of you guys got any insight on that?

Tazman,
I could only find one model 669, and I can't see any
difference in them. I went and bought a Model 66 SS in 357mag.
with 6" barrel. Now if it will warm up enough to go
outside and try it out without freezing I'll be happy.
In the book that came with it, it shows the 66 & 669
as the same gun. How many shots is yours? The one I bought
is a 7 shot, but I see they make a 6 shot also. Other then that,
I can't see any difference.

John,

Mine is a six shot, that may be the diff. While I was lubing and rubbing it down -- I've never cast and shot this particular gun with anything but jacketed and I'm just learning about cast and revolvers. My new Ruger Vaquero has a fairly tight cylinder, my .358 sized bullets push through with mild finger pressure so I thought I'd see what the cylinders in the old Taurus were. I took a .360 unsized cast bullet and it dropped right through the cylinder so I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at yet. Going to make a separate post to try to address that.

In all fairness I have yet to slug either barrel like I have on all my rifles, still trying to come up with some kind of jig to hold the pistol so I can drive a slug through. I know guys, I just hate the thought of marring up my brand new Vaquero...

The Taurus shoots jacketed REAL well but I"d like to shoot cast in it too.

I went out and tried out the 66 today, It shot a 1/2"
group at 15 yards using 8 gr's of Unique with a Nosler
158gr. jacketed. I'm waiting on a mold to come so I can try
some cast in it. Also have to plow a path so I can try it at a longer
distance. (Dang snow) Hopefully it will do well when I get farther back also.

Tazman, where are you located? The reason I ask is, I'm in the woods of
Northern Mi. to.

Alanson, about 15 miles or so north of Petoskey. Where are you at?

Not as far in the north woods,
I'm just west of Harrison, 20 miles
south of Houghton Lake.

LOL, Ya, but it can be a curse, just ask my wife.
I spend entirely to much money there, that's where I just bought
the Taurus 66. In all fairness, my wife told me to go get it, and never
complains about what I spend on guns, or bows, or arrows, or boolits.
Just lucky I guess. :o)

I've had a Taurus 66 with a 4" barrel for about 15 years now and I love it. It is one of the most accurate pistols I own. I have never had any problems with it and it came out of the box with sweet SA trigger pull. The most accurate load has been 38 cases with 158 gr HB WC using Bullseye. It also likes 2400 and the Lee TL358-158SWC.

Gee Wizz,

That's good to hear, I'm waiting on TL358-158SWC
mold to come, should be here Tuesday.
how many grains of Bullseye are you using in
the 38 cases, and how far will it shoot them and still be accurate?

A lady friend of mine bought the 7 shot stainless version a couple of years ago. I actually did better with that revolver than with my own 686. But not much. I'd still rather have the 686.

I have the 606 model Taurus, which is the smaller frame, snubby version of the 66 I believe.

That pistol has astounded me in the area of accuracy and handling. A very nice pistol for the money, and I have no complaints on the fit and function of that one. The trigger pull is one of the best I have in the revolvers as well.

Well, dad had a 4" stainless version. Great shooter. He bought a 6" blued model and sold the other. The 6" is amazing for accuracy. Took five shots to find windage and elevation, but I hit a 3" target at 100, not too shabby IMO.
