View Full Version : 2010 nevada cast bullet shoot

Yep, it's that time again...announcing the dates for NCBS 2010.

The Shoot will be held the weekend BEFORE Memorial Day, which falls on May 31. Therefore, May 21-22-23 will be the appointed time.

As usual, the Friday will see a get-together lunch for those arriving early enough. Friday evening is the "Rools Kommittee Dinner" at which we discuss the affairs of the Shoot, renew old acquaintances and meet new ones....plus, of course, hoisting a few and enjoying some good grub.

Saturday has a lot of shooting, followed by the now-traditional barbeque (or whatever) at my place. Sunday has still more shooting and in the evening we'll have the closing banquet at Ormachea's Dinner House, also a tradition and very much worth it.

Be aware that this is NOT a competition in the purest sense of the word. Rather, it's a friendly get-together with a few informal "matches" mixed-in. There are shoots for rifle and handgun, iron sight and scope, short range and long...you name it.

If you don't have guns for everything, rest assured that they WILL be provided, along with ammo and some "sage" advice...or maybe not so sage, come to think of it.

There's a reason that we are now organizing the ELEVENTH annual Nevada Shoot, and it's very simple. It's about the most shooting and socializing fun to ever occur in one location. Each successive shoot is like a family re-union where you actually LIKE everyone!

It would be wise to make hotel/motel/campground reservations as early as possible.

We look forward to seeing everyone who can possibly make it.

Bruce

LEFT PHOTO An overview of one of the ranges we used for most of the shooting.RIGHT PHOTO Two of the rifle teams at work. We had 4 rifle teams of 5 shooters each, and for the team pistol event we had 4 teams of 6 shooters each. These 2 events pit team against team (names pulled form a hat) in a timed accuracy challange. Fast and furious! :-)

The 400 yard line.

Where the long range match was shot. Any position EXCEPT off the bench! Gee, I forget now who won that, but BruceB will probably remember who it was.

Imagine, ALL boolit casters and shooters, ALL lovers of all types of rifles and pistols, ALL simply great people, and it's ALL FOR FUN. There are only 2 requirements, 1) Be safe 2) No whining.

Hi Guys,

WOW!
I did not know about this event and it is drawing quite a few people.
I live right outside of Reno and this thread has peaked my interest.

Looks like a ton of fun...I am definitely up for this.
Planning out that far is a bit of a quandary for me as my life is in a constant state of flux.

I would like to tentatively RSVP...I am about 90% sure that I can make it at this time.

BruceB...do we need to get on any kind of list?
Please feel free to contact me at my regular e-mail address:

I know that alot of the guys on here are partial to lever, single shot and military bolt guns...any objections to the AR? My latest addiction is pouring boolits for my .300 Whisper. Just got a new mold, the RCBS 200gr. .30 cal. Silhouette and I love this boolit! :-)

noclue, I parked a 5th wheel at the T casino RV park for $20 a night. The range is 3 miles out of town and is County owned so I don't think that would work but Bruce can chime in.

I had intended to be there last year but my boss, who is not a shooter had other plans for me. That and a pig hunt with Glen at nearly the same time ruined all my plans of attending. Gonna mark the calender and have a chat with the boss and explain priority's to him, what kind of idiot doesn't pour boolits and shoot? And he's not even a liberal, go figure.

The only list you will need to get on is a hotel reservation list. Quite a few shooters stay at the Sante Fe Inn. Get your reservations in early as you can. You wouldn't think so but Winnemucca is a busy place.

No problem with ARs as long as you are shooting cast bullets. No condom bullets allowed at NCBS. Glad to hear you are planning on attending. You won't be disappointed. This is a fun gathering Nevada style with no pressure and plenty of conversation and good times.

BruceB

Sheesh. You'd think I would remember to include such basic information as the location of the Shoot....CRS kicking in, I suppose.

It's nice to see the interest demonstrated here.

Run-ammucca, a motorcycle get-together, is usually held on Memorial Day weekend. If that holds true this year, it would be the weekend following our event. If not, well, I've about had it with jockeying dates to avoid others' events. The best bet is to simply make our reservations early.

Every one is welcome. As ammohead stated, just make a hotel/motel or whatever reservation and show up....no lists.

The range is open 24/7. I don't know if there's an "official" policy on camping, but the intent was to have a minimum of rules and regulations. I think it might be reasonable to have an RV or two overnighting, but typically we shut down around 4 p.m. or thereabouts and we must not impede other shooters from using the range in the remaining daylight. There is a first-class toilet facility, but no power or water is available.

An AR-type rifle is perfectly fine (as long as it shoots cast bullets). However, semi-autos are frowned upon for the team rifle match, where all us geezers tend to use such things as lever guns, bolt actions, and even, on one memorable occasion, a Trap-door Springfield! Speed of fire is considered a considerable advantage in this against-the-clock-or-other-team event, so strippers or extra mags are also verboten. (Otherwise I'd use my M1A and SMOKE 'em!)

As the date nears, I like to get some indication of how many folks intend to attend. This allows the making of accurate bookings for dinners, etc. This info isn't really required until a couple of weeks before the Shoot.

Just Call Me...G
01-16-2010, 08:54 PM
LOL! :-)
Thanks "ammohead" and "BruceB" for the info.

My AR is a .300 Whisper and I have some beautiful 200gr. Silhouettes for it as well as some 155gr. C.E. Harris Spire Points.

I do have "other" rifles...LOL!
I have a great truck gun that just came back from my gunsmith after do some mods. that make the rifle truly "mine"...it's an FR-8 Spanish Mauser in .308 and I have some lovely Lyman 173gr. boolits as well as the above-mentioned 155s.

SWEET!...I am getting excited.
Would look forward to meeting up with some of you guys and as one of the "youngsters" on here (only been casting for a year now)...would look forward to any sage advice.

As far as reservations...ummm, I am one of those guys who is into the
"rugged individualism" philosophy. There is plenty of BLM land around Winnemucca, I'll just "rough it".

Looking forward to it...

Pat, (BruceB please copy) Jaremy, the kid who borrows my guns and beats me, are booked in at the Santa Fe Inn and have been for a month. Remembering what the Jehovah's Witnesses did to us last year makes us make sure of reservations early. There are also two Best Westerns, Model T, and the Red Lion, and probably several others. Mapquest, Yahoo Maps, or Google maps can give you a list of accomodations.

Left: These type GC's are fine. Right: These type FLGC's are Verboten.

The womenfolk not shooting are socializing with other such womenfolk of like mind. Giving and getting information on how reining in hubbie's affliction has been less then hoped for, or how they've mostly compensated, or simply learned to overlook the mania. Some even have decided to take part in the rifle or pistol team competitions. There are also a few casino's in town.

If I bring my Garand and shoot cast boolits with PP's can I play? This thing cycles great and dumps the empties right in front of me and has the recoil of a .223 and the report of a much smaller gun than it is.

If I can convince my shooting buddy to come along (forum member also) we can share expenses and enjoy the trip together. I need to get with him before I commit and make the required motel reservation.

BruceB
03-08-2010, 10:16 AM
Heavens, YES!

Anything shooting cast loads is 100% OK.

Note, however, that the Garand will not be "eligible" for the Team Rifle shoot unless it's single-loaded. Other autoloaders are not permitted (subject to the Rools Kommittee decisions, of course). That's to even the playing field for those with "slower" rifles...no extra mags or stripper clips allowed, either.

Most shooters in this event single-load their rifles, because one MIGHT fire as many as thirty or forty rounds just as fast as possible. Reloading a magazine just takes too much time! I seem to recall one year when Buckshot used a trapdoor Springfield in this "speed" event, proving to some degree that accuracy trumps fast noise....

If my wife, Holly, can get out of a meeting she has scheduled for the day we should leave for the shoot I think we should be able to make it.
Now if someone can give me a ride to the range, Holly can take a couple people rockhounding up in Paradise Valley for opal or over to Chimney Dam for agate and jasper.
Normally we camp in some fine campsites on creeks or springs up in Paradise Valley but at other times of year. May, however, is a big month for mormon crickets and those big ugly bugs give me the willies (I can handle scorpions, tarantulas, etc) so we will stay in town.
What direction from town is the range? Is it near the creek just south of town and up the mountain.

I just made my reservation to attend. We will be at the Scottish Inn where we have stayed several times for rockhounding and occasional photography events. It is across the street from the Griddle Restaurant (great breakfasts) and three blocks from Ormacheas.
The Inn is older but comfortable and is economical ($49/night). Rooms are available as of today (3/30).
Now the question is how many rounds to bring for each firearm. Hmmmm?

I'll see you all there sometime Friday afternoon. I'll be leaving Vegas about 7:00 AM Friday morning. Don't know how long it will take to get there.

Any suggestions on how many rounds to bring? I'll be shooting .357 from one or more revolvers and .45 Colt from a revolver and a Winchester 94. I could easily shoot them all up in an hour or so, but I'd prefer to have them last through the weekend.

...............Stew, the only 2 events that are "Ammo Intensive" are the Team Pistol and Team Rifle shoots. Now if all your shots hit, neither may be so ammo intensive :-) We'll sure be glad to see you there. BTW, I've found the best firearm to use for the Team Pistol event is a swingout cylinder revolver. Now if you're very adept at reloading a magazine you might want to go that route too.

The .357s I'll be bringing are Smith M586s. The Ruger and Winchester are a lot of fun, so I'll be bringing them for that reason, but the Winchester is the also easiest rifle I have to deal with cast boolits. I don't expect to walk away with any prizes for my shooting. I'm going for the fellowship more than anything else, and for a chance to get out of town for a while.

Anyone know how long it takes to drive up from Vegas? My map program gives me a clue, but I'd like to hear from someone who has done it.

Just curious Mike...you go up I-25 to Cheyenne and pick up I-80 there?
I usually do I-25 to Fort Collins, thru town, then take US 287 to Laramie and pick up I-80 there.
It's about 20 miles shorter but it is NOT any faster than staying on the interstate.
You also have to be careful on 287. (I'm sure you know that though...)
Seems like every time I drive that stretch, I see at least one idiot who passes on a double yellow approaching the crest of a hill.
Hmmm, may have just talked myself into using the interstate from now on.

Microsoft Streets & Trips estimates about 9 hours. My only concerns about the roads are the one section where the elevation is over 7,000 feet, and small towns with hidden speed limit signs and concealed cops. As long as there are no storms while I'm going through there and as long as I pay attention, it should be an easy trip.

I've been up 15 before, and am coming back that way, as I'll be visiting some friends near Salt Lake. I've never been through the middle of Nevada before, so I'm looking forward to the "scenery", whatever that turns out to be.

I'm not worried about taking too much ammo, rather too little. I think I have the quantities figured out. All I have to do is load it. I'm about 1/3 finished with that task.

See y'all there.

For all practical purposes, there ARE really no towns.

If you do encounter a small outpost of civilization, you will see its few trees from about 20 miles away. This drive is mostly through open desert, and the human population is THIN!!!!

Bringing "extra" ammo costs nothing more than the components to load it. You may be surprised at the consumption rate, especially when others want to try out your artillery. There's a lot of swapping back and forth. However, IF you run out, there will be all sorts of other firearms to shoot, admire, and discuss, and someone will doubtless have some ammunition if needed as well.

Everyone should be aware that competition is not the main purpose of this shivaree. Its purpose is safe FUN, entertainment, interaction with others of like mind and interest....often, there's no shooting going on at all, because the discussions and tall tales have taken precedence for a while.

Soooo.....bring enough ammo to fire the events in which you may have an interest, plus at least 200% for "incidentals".

To our friend from Colorado,
8 hours from Las Vegas seems about right but I recommend taking some time to look at the scenery. Take the road that goes north from Tonopah up the Smokey Valley passing Round Mountain. As you drive up that road you will be passing but not seeing the outflows of several fine trout streams like Jett Creek. Also, if you are interested in a little quick rockhounding for some small pieces of fine agate, carnelian and jasper, you might make a quick stop about 4-5 miles up from the turnoff:D from hwy 6. Very nice tumbling material. Go under the antelope fence on the west side of the road and just look down. I find the milkshakes at the burger place in Austin to be quite tasty. Austin is about 2-1/2 hours out from Winnemucca.
have a great trip and drive safe. Quilbilly (aka Ward)

Question to BruceB,
I will probably be camping up in Paradise Valley on Thursday and Friday nights picking opals and maybe harassing coyotes so will get underway early into Winnemucca on Saturday. What time do festivities start on Saturday either at the range or in town in the morning?

There's not much of a schedule for this get-together.

I'll probably get to the range sometime before 0800, and there will likely be a few people out to lend a hand with set-up at that time.

Shooting usually starts around 0900, and we generally fire the team matches on separate days....one each on Saturday and Sunday. The Sunday team shoot is often the last event of the weekend, finishing it up with a blast.

In case you're not familiar with the area, just follow the signs for the county landfill and shooting range, which you'll see BEFORE getting to Winnemucca itself when coming south from Paradise Valley. Go up the mountain maybe a half-mile beyond the landfill, and there are excellent signs to follow to the range.

It won't be long now!

As long as the stock market behaves itself (or starts behaving itself better than it has this week), I'm almost ready to go. I have most of my ammo loaded and enough time/components to finish the loading. I took my Winchester 94 up to the range this afternoon and tested it with the Lee 230 RN TL boolits, as well as with the Lyman 452424 SWCs and it feeds either equally well. I couldn't remember whether the SWCs would feed or not. I haven't shot the carbine for a number of years. I'm looking forward to the fun and fellowship.

Was that place called the Griddle or something like that where we meet for lunch on Friday?
Jane and I should be there Thursday sometime. Just wish this global warming would stop, got an inch last night and it's still comming down, YUK.
I can't bring my farm of sillywet targets this year as we will be driving Janes Neon. I even think all those baby sillywets would take up too much space and weight.
I also have had orders from the doc to take it easy as I had a heart attack last week and wow did that throw a monkey wrench into getting more loads and guns ready. Seems you can't win for losing. Either way, we are so looking forwards to seeing all of you there Friday....

I've decided I'm also bringing the 4" S&W .32 H&R. I cast up 250 rounds of the RCBS 98gr SWC for it this evening, to go with the 50 rounds I already have loaded. Man, that's a nice mould. It took about five casts to get it up to temp, then it just turned 'em out as fast as I could cast and clear the mould. Not a single cull in the batch. It's easy on the lead, too. 250 rounds only dropped the level about an inch in my RCBS melter.

I have all my room reservations made and I'm going to download a couple of audio books to listen to on the way up. Glenn Beck's "Common Sense", Bill O'Reilly's "Bold Fresh" and possibly another. Can't wait to get on the road.

Yep, just one week. I hope everyone has already made those hard decisions about what to bring.

We'll miss some of our long-time regulars at this Shoot; for instance Mr and Mrs Onceabull (Idabull) have to pass on this one due to medical eventualities. 45nut falls into the same bracket, and maybe some other folks do as well. You will be missed.

Al Nelson (Swede) of Night Owl Enterprises has informed me that he will be unable to attend....BUT, he is being very generous in providing a gift certificate or two for the winners thereof to select an NOE mould! In thinking about this (dangerous, I know) it seems to me that the winners of Iron Sight Group and Scope Sight Group (both rifle events) might be a logical place to award these prizes.

45nut has sent along a couple of the Cast Boolit flags, and they will add some color and interest to the proceedings. I'd like to find a nice Stars and Stripes, too.

As in years past, we'll have an early-comers lunch at 1 pm REPEAT: ONE pm, at The Griddle restaurant, right on the main street. After that, all we have to do is pick up the tables and chairs , donated yet again by Brown's Hardware.

What do y'all think about a beer-only bar? There's a pleasant room at Sid's Restaurant for the Rools Kommittee get-together on Friday night, but the place is limited to bottled beer (and soft drinks, of course). If this is not adequate, the Flying Pig is still available, with its full bar. Please state your opinions IMMEDIATELY, si?

Mamma Mia....eleven years of doing this, and it's just as much fun as ever.

Proud Notable mention- my nephew's name is Alex Tilghman Conner.

Sam Elliott plays Alex's great great grandfather- the legendary Sheriff "Bill Tilghman" in the movie "You Know My Name".

The kid wants to come up and work with his uncle Pat and do some hunting and fishing so I may have some company and help soon.

Alex's Grandfather was also a WW2 vet and war hero in my eyes, so this kid comes from some tough American stock.

You're not going to be at the Rools Committee dinner Friday night?

BruceB
05-18-2010, 07:37 PM
Alright, folks. Here's the time-and-place info.

Rools Kommittee (that's ALL of us) will convene at Sid's Restaurant at 6:30 pm. Remember this place has a beer-only license, but comments to date certainly don't seem to reflect any pain on that subject. I did instruct them to lay in extra brewskis, "just in case". Sid's is located directly across Winnemucca Boulevard from Taco Bell and the Model 'T' casino and RV park.

The closing dinner on Sunday night has been held every year at Ormachea's Dinner House, a tradition that will be continued this year. Dinner will be at 7 p.m. Ormachea's is just one block west of Winnemucca Boulevard on Highway 95. Bring your appetite!

Of course, as already discussed, early-comers can meet up at The Griddle at 1 pm Friday for lunch. This is a small town, and The Griddle is also on Winnemucca Boulevard and easy to find a bit south of the Highway 95 traffic lights.

Saturday evening arrangements are pending and will be announced.

I'm a bit concerned about the weather forecast, but it will do whatever it's gonna do and there's not much more to say on the subject. We'll have a fine time, regardless.

I made it! I wasn't sure I'd be able to weather the drive up from Vegas, but things went pretty well. Looking back, it's kind of a blur. I quit counting the number of 10+ mile long straight stretches I drove. At least there was snow on the mountains that bordered the highway. The views of them broke the monotony of the long drive. One of these days I'm going to have to make another trip, and next time I'll stop in a couple of places and take some photos. I think Austin was the town with all the cool mining era buildings and churches. I did take a few shots, both while driving and at a stop or two. There's one place along Nevada 376 where you can see the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. They're very tall and snow covered and visible from about 100 miles away. If I have time this weekend, I'll try to get some of what I shot posted here. Anyway, I was in hunker mode about the drive when I left 'Vegas, but it turned out to be a relatively easy drive. I'm sitting here in my hotel room waiting for the Rools Committee dinner. See you there!

Day one down.

COLD, WINDY and by my count, we were snowed on for a couple of minutes on seven different occasions. Let's call it "an adventure".

Not whining, just reporting the facts.

Seriously, it was more fun than should be had by a bunch of folks shooting cast boolits while dancing around trying to keep warm. Needless to say, the dancing didn't help the group shooting competition. Try shooting from bench rest while dancing around trying to keep warm. It's no picnic.

In the evening, Bruce-B's wife and daughter put on a wonderful feast for us. Much socializing was accomplished while we wined and dined. Kudos to the Bruce-B family!

Photos of the Rools Committee dinner and the first day's shoot will be coming, as well as a video of a portion of the handgun team match competition. I'm going to wait until I get back home to deal with the photos, and I have to find a program to reduce the file size of the video.

Next report after the closing dinner tomorrow.

Well, I forgot I promised to do a Day 2 report after this evening's dinner, and here I sit in the motel room at 11:30 pecking away through the effects of Ormachea's Restaurant's table wine and some rum and Coke I supplied for myself.

If you thought Day 1 was interesting, you should have seen Day 2. Upon the shooter's arrival at the range, the snow arrived, as well. As it began to accumulate, we adjourned to the range building where there was a propane heater. Good choice.

After 15-20 minutes, the snow stopped temporarily and we got back to business. Shooting commenced and we enjoyed similar conditions to Day 1. I don't think it was quite as cold (34 by the thermometer in my truck, which runs +/- 2 degrees or so) as it was Saturday, but the calm winds at 8:00 quickly gave way to breezes similar to Saturday. I took refuge behind one of the trash cans near the firing point to keep the wind from penetrating my pants legs. I should have brought some long johns. Though we have a great time here, if you decide to come in 2011, prepare to spend all day at temperatures between 90 and 32F.

The two big events of the day were the 400 yard open sight contest and the team rifle shoot. The 400 yard shoot was won by MT-GIANNI's son, whose name has, unfortunately slipped my mind (see paragraph 1). He hit 5 of 5 using NVCurmudgeon's rifle, "Jezebel", which has won more events for others than it has for Bill. Damned fine shooting for an open-sighted rifle shooting cast. It speaks well for the shooter and coach.

The Team Rifle Match was won by the "odds". All shooters were lined up and Bruce-B went down the line indicating each shooter as "odd" or "even" to divide the shooters into two groups for the shoot. It wasn't even close. As a member of the "odds", I have to humbly say, WE CLEANED THEIR CLOCKS! They left 5-7 clays standing when the dust (and snow) settled. Not bragging, just reporting.

After the team shoot and photos, we quickly cleaned up and evacuated the range, returning to our hotel rooms/campers/homes to warm up, nap and get ready for the evening's dinner at Ormachea's Restaurant. I learned from this trip that Northern Nevada and Southern Idaho are heavily populated by Basque's. These people come from the area of Spain bordering France. Many were shepherds. While Ormachea's sounds like a Mexican restaurant, it is far from that. It serves a Basque-style meal of excellent quality and GENEROUS portions.

Despite the weather, I think it can safely be said that all attendees had a very memorable and fun time. Arrangements are being made for a consolidation of all photos taken and these will be posted as they arrive and can be processed for posting.

Regards,

Stew

Recovering consciousness this morning at 0630, I thought , "Good grief, I'd better get going on a report to the Board!"

Fortunately, I found that by the time I was zonked last night, Stew was busy doing the reporting I should have done. Thanks, Stew.

Yes, this will be the year that we'll look back on and say "Remember the year in the hail/snow?" It was rotten, as far as the weather went. However, there seemed to be NO effect on the spirits of the shooters! Smiles and jokes were just as prevalent as they ever were in previous Shoots in good weather. It was great testimony to the will and determination of our people to enjoy themselves, regardless of outside conditions. There were MANY to whom I spoke about the environment, and all of them said that weather is weather, it's gonna do whatever it's gonna do, and we will enjoy ourselves no matter what comes over the mountain. That's exactly how it turned out.

On Day Two, conditions worsened rapidly in early afternoon, so I figured we'd best get the Team Rifle match underway.....it's normally the last event of the weekend. We ended up firing the match in HEAVY hail. In the few minutes that she observed the match, wearing a borrowed straw cowboy hat, my wife reported that over a half-inch of hail accumulated in the crown of the hat. Everything was covered, rifles, ammo, tables and shooters, and we STILL were having fun. It was danged near inspirational, lemme tell you.

The only concession to the weather gods was that we wrapped up the Shoot a bit earlier than normal. Apart from that, it was business as usual and a fine old time for all concerned.

Quite a few new faces were on-scene, and they quickly fit right into the gang just as in years past. It's not hard to find things to discuss, especially when we all "know" each other from our correspondence here on the Board.

Unfortunately, and also as usual, some of us had to depart a bit early for the long haul home. This means missing the closing dinner, of course. Others are meeting once more for breakfast at 0830 this morning to continue the event as long as possible.

We'll have more details on scores etc. soon. Right now, I want to give a huge "THANK YOU" to Swede Nelson at Night Owl Enterprises, who sent two gift certificates for presentation at this Shoot. We decided in advance at the Rools Kommittee dinner that the winners of the two Rifle Grouping matches (iron sights and scope divisions) would receive these certificates, and the winners were NVWalt and MattG. The certificates are for a group-buy mould of the winner's choice, and carry a maximum value of $125 each. Let me tell you right now, based on my personal experience with a pair of NOE 4-cavity moulds, that $125 will buy one HELL of a mould! My 4-cavity jobs cost less than $100 each, so $125 would buy....pretty near anything one's casting heart could desire. Our thanks to you, Al.

More later, but I'm happy and relieved to tell y'all that the weekend was a huge success.

Well, I rolled up to the house about 2 hours ago.
First thing, I had a blast! Hopefully I'll be able to make it out next year. These guys have already inspired me to buy a couple of toys.
I now want a lever action, not sure on caliber yet. I was already wanting one but these guys sealed the deal so to speak.
Second, I want to get my hands on a decent military rifle and put peep sights on it.
I wasn't able to use my rifle for a lot of things due to the fact it wears a scope. (Rem. 700 .270 Win)
I still can't believe my 2.11" group won the 100 yard scope group competition and a mould from NOE!! Definitely not my best shooting but hey, shooting in the wind and rain isn't conducive to good groups! (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!) [smilie=1:

Anyone who's close enough to go to one of these, you really need to do it. What a great group this is. I felt right at home from the git go.
The FEAST Karen B put on Saturday night was unbelievable. So a big THANK YOU goes out to her.
Sure wish I could have stayed for the dinner last night at Ormachea's. :(
There was no way I could do it though. Had 865 miles to drive and MUST be at work tomorrow.

Thanks for putting on a great shoot Bruce.
I enjoyed meeting everyone who was there.
I'm already looking forward to next year!

Awright, just got home an hour ago, and Rick/Buckshot should be home in about 90 minutes or so. We skirted bad weather all the way home, and the trip was beautiful--and unremarkable from the standpoint of conditions. Just another fine day in Northern NV!

The weather might have been a little raspy this year, but the warmth and friendliness of the company was unabated. Karen and Kim did their SUPERB job on Saturday's dinner that just outdoes the previous year's engagement every year. The Cast Boolit Flag waved proudly alongside the DON'T TREAD ON ME banner at the Humboldt County Public Range, and given the shooting conditions this year--some excellent scores were fired.

Thanks to all who attended, contributed to the meeting through fellowship, shooting of the breeze and of firearms, and generally being some great people to meet with each May. SPECIAL THANKS to the Bannister Family for having the gumption to take on this Shoot and produce such an enjoyable experience that I and many others look forward to with great anticipation.

Finally got back to my fort here in Ruth and wanted to thank everyone involved at NCBS this year and especially Bruce and Karen and her daughter Kim for an incredable feast and all the leg work and time it takes to basically put this great shoot together for the clan of cast boolit shooters. My thanks to all those who helped to make NCBS #11 a great success. Host family Bruce, Kim, and Karen, Mac the fastest camera in the west, though I think AZ Stew is also planning to be a contributor there, Brown's for again providing the tables and chairs, Humboldt County for a beautiful range, all those who work so hard keeping the range beautiful, NOE for the generous contribution of mould gift cetificatesl, and especially all the CB brothers and sisters who were undaunted by the Nevada spring weather. Looking forward to seeing you all for # 12, Bill

I know that AZ-Stew was going to post his pics and even try and get a video posted. It may be a while though.
He left NCBS and is visiting friends in Salt Lake City right now. Not sure when he's planning on being back home...

This is from Saturday, with a fair number of the folks milling around the line. Most of the ladies hadn't shown up yet.

http://www.fototime.com/C18A10C8ABE3A8C/standard.jpg

Still Saturday, and team 1 & 2 shooting the "Team Pistol Event". I'd dropped my digital camera a couple weeks back and it hasn't been the same since, so about half of the pics I took didn't turn out very well, and some never did achieve a good focus. This picture was also taken too far away and doesn't do justice to all the Javalina lube smoke that was present. I did take a walk behind the line while they were still industriously slinging lead downrange trying to cut their board's in half and I was tasteing Javalina most the rest of the afternoon!

http://www.fototime.com/7A65F82DA946CAD/standard.jpg

This was Sunday. That's Urny on the left mugging for the camera, with 9.3x62's back is to the lens. That's BruceB on his Arctic Cat, just back from a rescue mission having helped someone who'd gotten lost in the snow on their way back to the line from the 100 yard targets :-)

http://www.fototime.com/B53D0533C831D27/standard.jpghttp://www.fototime.com/0E0D7F48182F41A/standard.jpg

LEFT: Looking down the 400 yard line. As mentioned my camera wasn't focusing well so the target is BARELY visible as a black spec at the extreme left end of the berm. RIGHT: This is MTGianni's son MT Matt, in his match winning position as he punishes the 400 yard steel plate. I forget the boolit weight but I believe MTGianni said they had 57.0grs of surplus WC860 stuff in the 30-'06 case. EVERYONE who shot at the plate shot a 30-'06 of some description except for 7's & 8's who shot, well ................ a 7x57 and 8x57 in two attempts:-) Your present scribe managed to make 4 hits, but missing on the 5th :-(

http://www.fototime.com/2BC706C68C2D800/standard.jpg

This is what the front side of MT Matt looks like. A few seconds before a really good hailstorm started and was slowly advancing toward us, so I took the shot. We'd been peppered by the windblown advance, bit in the mid-distance you can see the much thicker 'line' being laid down by the serious part of the advancing front.

The guys out there at the 100 yard lline are hanging the clay birds for the "Team Rifle" event which wrapped up Sunday and the weekend's event's.

BTW, I must add that this year there were 2 "Ladies" event's. One pistol and one rifle, I believe it was. The gal shooting the pistol event had NEVER shot before, and she shot a 49-3X !!!!!!!!!!!

I'm borrowing my friend's computer here in Salt Lake just so I can comment on the photos. They will be forthcoming, but probably not until late this coming weekend. I still have a 2-day drive back to Phoenix and I'm not leaving until Thursday morning. Then I can sit down at my home computer and get some proper photo editing done. As Matt said, I took a video of the first relay of the Team Pistol shoot and as soon as I find a (free) program that will help me compress the file size, I'll post a link to it. I just don't think our readers who use dial-up want to download the 280 megabyte raw video file. I'll let you know how it works out.

And an appolgy to MT Gianni and Matt. I was sure Bill had said Matt won the match with his rifle. Musta been the table wine. Regardless, it was a fine demonstration of shooting! Good job, Matt.

Regards,

Stew

That rifle team was a bunch of hard shooting folks. A few times I'd draw a bead on a bird and it'd explode before I could squeeze the shot off. Not many things better then shooting a match in a snow storm :-)

Marlene, Mom and I arrived home safely about 4:30p. yesterday! Our visit to Idaho was a good one. Our opinion is that Joy is recovering as well as can be expected. Even though the mending is in progress, it is going to take some time, but she is able to do a lot for herself, which give Onceabull some relief.

So many to thank:
Firsrt, we thank everyone, what a GREAT group of folks! Now, for some specifics; Thank you Bruce, Karen and Kim for all you do from setting up the event to your wonderful HOSPITALITY! Karen and Kim make "bon-appetit" a reality!

NVcurmudgeon, Marlene (cookie cutter), especially thanks you for the new Ladies events and the CLASS Ladies "Golden Wheel Weight Awards"!

Besides those wonderful folks that we already know, it was great to meet newcomers: Our cousins, Geri and Chris, our grandson Chris, my friend Caleb Chinn, AZStew, Matt G., Matt Moulton, Quillbilly, BeeMan, Tom the "Safari Guy" and David Turnbull. There is always a danger when listing names of forgetting someone, so if I did please forgive me.

I will be posting some pictures, hopefully within a day or two. Buckshot , AZStew and MT Gianni those are great pictures you have posted. I will be sending you a PM to see if we can trade a pic or two.

This was my first time to the NCBS or similar event and this was the most enjoyable trip I have made in many, many years. I have never been made to feel so welcome by so many fine people I have never met before. The weather didn't matter including the 8" of snow I found on my truck when I broke camp 30 miles north of Winnemucca on Saturday to head to the shoot.
A big standing 'O' to Bruce's family who prepared that fantastic buffet on Saturday evening. As always, Ormacheas is one of the best restaurants in Nevada.
Thanks again to all and I can hardly wait for next year. I just hope the scope mount on my favorite cast boolit rifle will stay tied down so I can use it for the competitions.

http://www.inficad.com/~gstewart/ncbs_2010/team_pistol_relay_1.wmv

Please excuse the poor video quality. The original is very crisp, but the file size is 184 megabytes. I didn't think the guys on dial-up would care to bother with it, so there is considerable quality lost in the compressed video file. Even at this compressed and edited level, the file size is 4.5 megabytes. This will be easy for those on cable or DSL, but it may still be a chore for dial-up customers.

Pic #27: That was me shooting at the gong. Seeing as the other Matt (MT Gianni's son) had already run 5 for 5 it only took one shot to put me out of the running. It was a real bad miss.

Crystal Clear, Welcome :Fire:

Glad to see you aboard! Maybe this will spure our other familey members to get with it. Once you do, you can't do with out it.

I am actively watching a couple of sights for more FIREARMS and other stuff that I think will peak the interest of both YOU and Winner-GERI! Also, I will accept any help/ideas from onceabull.

Agian, welcome,

PS. I'm betting when Marlene returns from golf, she will be posting.

Looking over these posts makes me sad levi and I missed it this year. He is still on the couch with 8 titanium screws in his ankle (Wonder if i can add them to the pot?). And I am fererishly working honey doo's before my next trip to the sand box courtesy of Uncle Sam. I wish we were there to defend our titles. Hope to see you next year. Thanks, Moldy Joe

...........There were quite a few that were missed this year, including those who hadn't ever attended yet. Ammohead has a new job and missing work a month after signing on might have been bad ju-ju :-) A well, there's always next year. BTW, I'm already planning for next year!

Sorry I missed the shoot this year. I'm stuck here in Sunny Afghanistan. Any chance we can do a mil surplus M-240 or Ma-duce 50 cal shoot next year. I know where I can get tons of Brass, just can't send it home. Looking forward to it next year. Mouldy
