How fast do you guys load this one? I'm thinking it ought to have a gas check

hamour
02-04-2010, 02:19 AM
Tippet, cast of the proper alloy and sized to fit your revolver cylinder throats, this bullet can be driven to full .357 speed with out leading.

Elmer Keith developed this bullet to be shot out of .38 special cases in the old S&W N Frame revolvers. The standard load was around 13.0grs to 13.5 grs 2400

He used 16-1 alloy. I prefer Lyman # 2 and get no leading out of my revolvers or Marlin rifle.

PS: This bullet will NOT fit a S&W N frame revolver crimped at the crimping grove if you use .357 mag cases. You have to crimp over the front edge or use .38 special cases. I use 38 cases and load 11.5grs 2400 for my "N" frames. It works perfectly with K and L framed revolvers and magnum cases.

In 38 special revolvers this bullet likes to be driven as fast as you can get it and be safe for your gun.

It is very accurate at speed and packs a wallop.

It is a classic bullet as good today as it was in the 1930's

If I wanted a .357 bullet to use Gas Checks on, it would be the NOE 360-180 WFN, it is just about the same weight but the nose is shorter allowing the use of magnum cases in the N frames and is better suited to the lever action rifles. Both are great and shoot very well.

machinisttx
02-04-2010, 11:33 AM
I've loaded bullets from my NOE 358429 to an average velocity of 1430 fps in magnum cases. Test gun was an 8.375" barreled S&W 586. I need to harden my alloy a bit, but I had only slight slivers of leading after a 60 round load workup. The leading may have come from some other loads I fired, I really don't know.

I tried a few yesterday in some 38/44 loads and got some flat primers in two different guns with 12 grains of 2400. I couldn't detect any case head expansion, so I'm not really sure if the winchester primers are too soft for the load or if the load is just too hot. Speed from a very worn 4" Model 28 was 1172 fps while a 2.25" SP101 averaged 1103 fps.

If I did my math correctly last night(and I'll find out in a few minutes when I start loading), this bullet can be used with magnum cases in the N frame S&W's and the SP101 by just going about .025" below the trim to length recommended in loading manuals. You should end up with about .010" of clearance in case a bullet pulls slightly.

Edit: A trim length of 1.26"(magnum brass) gives .015" clearance between the bullet and the front of the cylinder in my SP101, and .010" in my M28-2. The blackhawk should have plenty of cylinder length to avoid extra trimming, I don't know about any of the others. If the cylinder isn't recessed for case heads, it will need to be at least 1.600" long for the bullet to work in standard length mag brass. Add another .060" onto that if the case heads are recessed.

Tippet
02-04-2010, 12:09 PM
thanks guys I appreciate the input. My intended use is a couple of rugers, an old blackhawk and a somewhat less old snubby security-six. Sounds like this one will work. I've smelted about 100 lbs of 16:1 ingots from pure lead and bar solder. I think I'll go ahead with this one.

So would this boolit be a good one for a lever action? I don't have any moulds for the .357 yet and would like to get a "universal" mould. I really like the looks of this one! (have a S&W 586 .357 and the lever action is on my want list)

hamour
02-07-2010, 05:34 PM
Blackthunder, I have used this bullet in its solid SWC form in my Marlin 1894. It shot well and functioned great too.

In my particular rifle, the bullet fed smoothest using .38 special cases. It fed reliably with .357 cases but had a slight "catch" when I babied it at the bench. Standing up and working the lever like I was hunting, each case fed great.

I have no experience with the hollow point version in my Marlin.

I also loaded the NOE 360-180 WFN in my Marlin, it had the same "Catch" in .357 brass as the SWC.

You will not be sorry with this bullet.

hamour
03-05-2010, 02:50 AM
Swede, since you have forced me, I will need 1 mold each in RG4 and 5 cavity for a total of two molds.

How much for shipping with two molds?

To all concerned, I got some of the "Captains" range lead ingots (in vendors section) added 2.5% tin and it made a very good mix. I cast this bullet using a 5 cavity NOE mold from the 1st groupbuy. I got to 11.5grs 2400 in .357 and .38 cases with out leading. Fill out was great.

This mix and the hollowpoint should be just about right. The heavy load in .38 cases was for my "N" frame S&W revolvers, so use with caution. The old Keith HD load for this bullet was 13.5grs 2400 in .38 cases! That is very stout!

RG's allow you to cast multiple HP's at once.

This is an RG2
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/blammer8mm/Cast%20boolits%20fun/DSCN7740.jpg

the RG4 is for 4 cavities.

RG2 is what I ordered. Comes with a pin set to block the holes so you can make non-HP boolits as well.
Standard moulds can have one cavity HP'd for additional cost. I'm only going for a 2-cavity.
I figure the RG can do it either way in both cavities.

Got shipping notice today! Can't wait.

Aside: RG molds are the ones that produce Hollow Point bullets. Regular molds produce flat nose bullets (with no ability to make HP's)

If you buy a RG mold, with extra set of blank pins, you can swap out HP pins for blank pins, and make either HP's or FN.

Hope that explains that correctly.

BTW, I got my delivery of extra mold handles (third order this year!) just in time. The year isn't over yet, and might have to place yet another order (five at a time!)

Never having an RG mold I chose a RG2, sure wish I had done with a 4. Did some casting the other day using a LEE 5 banger in .359 and a NOE 3 hole .432. Boy did the .359's pile up fast. More is better.

Just got mine in the mail, another work of art. Next time if I want a HP it will be a RG4.
Thanks Guys for tha hard work in getting these out.

Oh my......

I got my RG04 in today, and fired up the pot.

This is my first RG style mold.

I have to say that I'm spoiled by the way M-P Molds does their pins, and not at all happy with the way the RG style pins work:

They slide in grooves in a set of stampings that hang down under the mold. I had to do some serious adjusting to get this mold to operate under the pot. I refuse to ladle pour....
Three times in ten minutes, while heating up the mold incrementally, I got some lead in the groove, which would have prevented the pin from sliding away from the cavity.
The pins hang, wiggle, and rotate. I found it difficult to extract (with needle nose) bullets that wouldn't drop when I tapped the handle.
The bullets are fragile when HOT, and I found lots of the noses fracturing or breaking off completely when tapping to get the bullets to drop.

If someone wants this mold, I will ship it for what I paid for it. It comes with the extra set of blank pins.

I got my RG4 today and fired up the pot! This is a really good lookng mold and is my first HP of this type.

I did the break in procedure and warmed it up and went to work starting with a melt temp of 700. I could not get the boolits to drop without using needle nose pliers to remove them like DukeInMaine. THIS CAN"T BE RIGHT! I thought it might need to be hotter and tried that but it was no different.

So, I let it cool and removed all the pins and very carefully removed a tiny sharp edge(burr?) where the pin transions to full size AND I put them in a cordless drill and added a dab of MOTHERS polishing compound to the nose and spun them with the nose in a paper towel at medium speed for about 20 seconds, resulting in a mirror finish.

The result?.....Boolits drop off like butter from a hot knife! They almost jump off the pins.

Great boolits and great mold.

Thanks NOE.

Got my RG2s today, this one and the "leftover" 44, look good, can't wait to cast a few.
Thanks Al / NOE!

PS: lonnydk, I noticed that burr, thought it was a step.
Also got the 429421, while I can feel that transition on the pins it's not pronounced.
How did you remove the burr? I want to be careful!
Of course I'll try the mold first but if it's sticky maybe I should polish the pointy end first
before trying to remove the burr?
I have some Simichrome, don't think that could hurt the pins.

Maybe a mod can MOVE these follow up posts to the Follow Up area.

So, seeing the comments about the "burr" on the pins, I went down to the shop, and took a close look at mine.

The groove at the back end of the pins is made wide enough so that it will slide on the bracket. That wideness causes the pin to become misplaced when filling the mold. And, a bit of it sticks into the cavity.

So, I took some used emery cloth (probably equivalent to 1200 grit) and polished the heck out of the steps (didn't remove the steps, just polished the edge of them), and cleaned up the rounded ends. All nice and mirror shiny.

The pot is heating up while I type this, and I'll try the mold again, but it's still available if anyone wants it.

I heat cycled mine on the stove up to about 400 degrees 4 times and then started casting with it. No problems at all. I knock the sprue, flip the mold over and open the halves, bullets fall off the pins no problem. I then close the halves, close the sprue, crack the halves open a hair and tap the handle pivot screw to make sure the pins seat all the way down and then reclose the halves for another cast.

Heat Cycle question: This is my first NOE mold, I bought sold version in 5 cav. Is it necessary to do this with my new NOE mould? Or can I just clean/degrease/heat it up and start casting?

I bought a 5 cavity from the 311041 buy. I did not get consistently good bullets until the 3rd or 4th casting session. I did not heat cycle that mould at all before starting to cast with it. This one I cycled on the stove and then started casting. I got great bullets as soon as the mould came up to temp.

murphy, I've done it both ways on the NOE moulds. If I clean and the just cast with it, I usually get good fill out about the 10th pour then it all comes together and from that point on I get nuthin but good fills.

I've also heat cycled it a few times and on the 2nd or 3rd cycle I've gotten it 'broke in'.

My heat cycling is, heat it up pour about 2 fills, dump then let it cool for hour then preheat pour a few fills, let cool. I'm just impatient. :)

I have some Simichrome, don't think that could hurt the pins.

I noticed the "step", and it may have been there on purpose to provide a smooth transition in the hp but I treated it like a burr, and the boolits look great.

Now, I have to say don't recommend this burr removal to someone else.( I can't be responsible for what you do to your mold AND it is delicate and also difficult to describe how I did it.)

I will try...
I did it with a sharp knife blade. Hold the pin with the point up in your left hand and place the sharp edge of the blade on the sholder with the blade tip pointing to the left. Raise the knife handle so the leading edge of the blade is the only part touching the shoulder to the left of center. Hold the blade there with light pressure while turning (spin) the pin to your left. Remember, light pressure, it is a very small burr and you just want to scrape it down, not cut it off and you for sure don't want to produce any cuts or gouges.

Now, .... polish , also lightly.

NOTE!!!! You may get very good results by just polishing. YMMV

My only RG 4 mould is that big fat huge 44-300 hollow point, I'm super happy with it, it's way faster than a Cramer type and drops terrific boolits fast and consistant. One thing I really think helps fillout is you can sit the end of the pins directly on a hot plate and it heats the mould through the pins.
Sorry, I did not do the heat cycles, just cleaned in hotter than hell water and dawn and further degreased with denatured alcohol, just don't have the patients.
Works good though, very good.

The hollow point pins furnished with this mould is a stepped pin.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/swedenelson/358429pin.jpg

I would try to cast with the pins furnished before I tried to change them.
The most important thing to keep in mind with the RG moulds is to preheat
your mould blocks to 350 to 400 deg. Cold pins don't work at all.

redneckdan's description of how to cast with a RG is right-on:
I knock the sprue, flip the mold over and open the halves, bullets fall off the pins no problem. I then close the halves, close the sprue, crack the halves open a hair and tap the handle pivot screw to make sure the pins seat all the way down and then re-close the halves for another cast.

True, but fill out wasn't the problem...getting the damn things to let go of the pins was....[smilie=b: I had the lee pot going WFO and was casting as fast as possible. I guess I may have to use the stove burner to keep the pins hot.

Some of you may agree with my method and some may not, but it works for me.

I have used bullplate lube with good success when used on the hollow point pins as a releases
agent. But the problem I have with bullplate is the vapors seem to get into the mould cavities and cause wrinkles.

A while back I started using Kroil on the hollow point pins, with very good sucess.
I start by heating the pot until the lead is melted and add enough until it is within 1/2' of the top of the pot, I then slowly insert the casting ladle into the lead to heat-up. Now comes the part some of you may not agree with.
I place the NOE mould on the pot with the hollow point pins and the sliding holders on the bottom of the mould rest in the molten lead. The lead will solidify around the outside of the mould. Leave it sit there for about 5-7 minutes, at that point lift the mould from the pot. Everything will be hot enough that the lead will not stick. I then open the mould and with a Q-tip apply about four coats of Kroil to the tips of the hollow point pins. Applying the Kroil will cool the pins and all you have to do is set the mould back on the pot for a minute or so. Boolits come off easily with a tap to the hinge pin and you need only reapply once when the start to stick if they stick at all during the casting session.

I usually preheat the mold in the melt but that didn't seem to work. I got out my camp stove and used that. Finally when I got the mould wicked hot they started to drop a little better but still not right. I'm probably going to try polishing the pins with 2000 grit compound and go find me some kroil.

I have had good luck with 3 RG-4 molds, one in this bullet, one in the 360180 and one in 41 mag.

All have to be run hot, and slowly cooled to proper temp. If the bullets start sticking after a move on my lead pot then I bump it up to where it was and cast until I have to reload the 20lb pot.

When the pins get cold thet stick, crank the heat up until they do not stick.

Faster casting helps also, once these molds are at proper non sticking temperature, hollow points fall like rain!

I find that after I fill the mold, I invert the mold and with a slight spreading tension on the handles, I tap the pivot screw, the mold pops apart and bullets drop off (slight shake might be needed). I turn the mold up right and shake to settle the pins and close. Refill the mold and repeat. Do not take time to sort just keep the fast pace and sort latter.
