Been thinking for a while I NEED a 30/06 in a single shot rifle. I know there is the #1 always available but would really like a high wall. Did Browning ever make one ? I see Winnys sometimes but there are the "Centennial" model celebrating 100yrs of the cartridge and I really don't care for the gold embellishments. I can't afford a Dakota. Anyone know of any I'm over looking? I assume a modern high wall either Browning or Winchester could be rebarrelled but not sure I want to go that route. There must be something out there. I'm not crazy about the looks of a T/C prohunter or whatever they call it.....want a more classic look. Is the #1 my only option? Oh and I see Ruger is putting a #1 in 300 H&H this year hmmmm.:coffeecom

Browning's Model 78 and 1885 highwall was made in 30-06 in both round and octagon barrel. Of course, there is T/C's Encore.

I had a Winchester 1885 in 270 WSM with a 28" barrel !

While it was a great shooter and you could ring every little bit of velocity from that LONG barrel it was kinda cumbersome to hunt from a treestand with and certainly to long for carrying in the woods where I hunt !

On the other hand the Ruger #1B isn't so bad !

And the Ruger #1A in 30-06 with the little 22" barrel should be just about right for a single shot deer rifle for use in the treestand or for stalking the woods !

While not in 30-06 the Browning 1885 LOW WALL is a pretty darn nice rifle for carry and hunting if you can find one in 260 REM or 243 WIN !

There is the Remington/Biacal at a very reasonable price. I cant say at this point if they are good or not.
I handled a couple and they looked nice.
There was an issue with acquiring a scope base to fit and I don't know if that has been dealt with yet.

I have one in .270Win.
The ones with the walnut stocks are way better than the birch wood stocks.
The metal work is great while the fit of the wood is very proud but if your a tinkerer and handy with a chisel and sandpaper, they come up real good.

Scope mounts are a problem with the 11mm rail but I have been thinking of getting another in 7.62x39 for cast boolits and fitting a peep sight.

I just went thru that as my 74' Sharps 45-120 was stolen on 11/26/09 (Thanksgiving day) along with 6 other long guns and 4 pistols plus cash out of my LOCKED gunsafe.

You need to pick what type of action you want too shoot as well as the distance, then buy that if production made, or buy the action(expensive) and and have a custom barrel(reasonable costs) put on. Depending on the action type, then stocks may or may not be pre-made, if not custom made.

Me, I like banging steel at a 1000yds. What a hoot that is. That means I like the .45 caliber alot for that distance and .338 on the smallest end. Hard to find a .45cal long barrel (34"plus) for any type of action.

So I finally choose a Mauser 98 action to be used as a single shot(easy $30 mod) in a Remington 798, 458wm, 26", brown laminate stock, $517 delivered.

The 458wm is close too a 45-90 in capacity or just right for my BP loads at 1000yds OR I can full bore load any 458wm smokeless load without any worry of disaster.

I liked that thought so much that I also bought another Rem 798 in 30-06, 24", synthetic, for $335 delivered. Same Mauser 98 large action. This one will be a 300wsm long barrel before I'm done at about $900 for a custom fit strong bolt action rifle.

Who is selling those Baikal/Remingtons these days? I've seen a couple of posts recently saying what a decent project rifle these turned out to be, and have always been curious about them--but I notice that Remington has dropped the Baikal line of guns. A check of the web indicates that EAA may not be importing them either. These seem to be a really good buy for a gun dedicated to Boolet firing.

I have owned both a Ruger #1 (in 7mm Rem Mag) and a Browning Highwall (30-06) and both were fine rifles and very accurate with the correct loads. I think the Browning goes for a little more, but the Ruger is not cheap, either. Both have classic looks and fine lines but in my opinion the Browning gets the nod for "cool factor". There are a bunch of other great single shots that other posters have mentioned above as well, but the Browning and the Ruger are the only ones on the list I have actually owned.

Yeah, I'm kinda leaning toward a Ruger (never owned a #1 always wanted to) but I do like the High Wall action. I guess I'll take my time and see what I come across. Saw on Gunbroker a Wickliffe that looked pretty nice. Never bought a gun over internet though I kinda like to get my paws on em before plunkin down serious (to me) money.

CDNN Sports is closing out the Remington 798 for that cheap price via telephone (800-588-9500), and not listed on there website. Remington only had a 5yr contract from what I understand for the Zastava Mauser 98 action.

I looked around and couldn't find it any cheaper.

Thanks, T-Bone, but I wasn't referring to a gun on a 98 action--What I meant was the SPR-18 break-open single shot rifles. I was curious as to whether or not somebody besides Remington will be importing the Baikal line--single shot rifles as well as those shotguns that were plentiful a few years back.

The Blaser K95 is a really nice rifle. You don’t need the Super Luxus version, there are less fancy versions, too. Merkel K1 is good, too but my personal preference would be the K95. I have the pleasure of shooting one occasionally and that rifle is a shooter. All Blaser rifles have a very good trigger and are really accurate straight out of the factory. You cannot go wrong there. Usually one would say only to shoot rimmed cartridges out of a break-open rifle due to the extractor that might slip the groove. But so far I never experienced this when shooting with my friend’s rifle.
Of course there is Krieghoff … didn’t have the chance to shot a single shot but a side by side in 9,3x74R. They are handling very well. Blaser and Krieghoff have a safety cocking system taking the function of an outside hammer. It looks like a tang safety but actually “cocks” it. So they are very safe too.

I suppose you’ll not find too many shooters owning a K95 in the US…

If you can find one of the old break-opens made in Ferlach that is a different category – if you are after something special.

I own one of the T/C Aristocrats, break open single shot with interchangeable barrels. One of them is a 30-06, and I have a 12 gauge 3 1/2 inch barrel. And a few others. Neat little rifle with the double set triggers.

Hubertus,

Boy would I love to shoot any of those rifles and would really love to own one (or two, or three ... )! There are some mighty fine quality guns that have come out of, and do come out of Europe. Maybe the exchange rate will get better some day.
