I know that this boolit was designed for BP, but has anybody loaded it with smokeless in the Marlin 1895G?

Any tips for loading this boolit?

I have not loaded this boolit for a Marlin 1895, but I have the mold and have loaded it in 45-70 for my Sharps with both smokeless and BP. Obviously I did not have to deal with function through a lever action, but it shot quite well for me. I have a couple of boxes of loaded ammo with this boolit that serves as a medium to large game load.

Works great in my 1895GG. I use both 4198 or Unique. Just be sure to crimp over the top band. The groove below is not a crimp groove. It feeds just fine though mine when crimped over this top band. I also size it to .459 and use Lee alox tumble lube.

thx997303,

If you load stiff enough to generate any kind of significant recoil, crimp in front of the front band and cycle/shoot from the magazine... check to see if the bullets get slammed back into the cases of the loaded rounds while in the magazine during recoil.

I've loaded the Lyman 457193 with 32.5 grains IMR4198 for a mv of just over 1600 fps. crimped in the top grease groove they feed OK in my Browning (Miroku) '86 carbine, but they won't quite feed in my Marlin 1895 CB. The problem is the bullet's too long when the carrier tries to lift the cartridge from the magazine up to the chamber. The RCBS 45-405-FN is about the same weight and feeds in the Marlin much better while still allowing you to crimp to avoid pushing the bullet back in the case too far in the tubular magazine.

It's the only bullet i've loaded for two different Marlins. Has worked well. Lost gold cap on tooth shootin up steep hill with this bullet ahead of charge of H322. I size to .460

Realizing that I'm joining this thread abit late, wonder if you could advise what your load is when using Unique. I regularly see load data for 4198 in the 45/70, but not Unique. Thanks for any input.
