Here is the latest from the shop. The trunnion seats are being forged and the hardware blackened. This is for the grand kids as they almost killed me when I sold the last one. This is bored for golf balls and has a screw out touchhole that will either use fuze, priming charge or an adapter for air. With the nail compressor the kids have a ball shooting golf balls across the field. The barrel is turned from 4140 and is recessed for the main charge. The whole outfit weighs about 60 pounds and with practice you can drop a golf ball in a trash can at 100 yards.

Very nice. My copy of a Confederate Coehorn mortar uses Coke cans filled with concrete. One of my ancestors belonged to a company that used Coehorns during the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, VA.

A friend, yes I have a friend, told me the story of a G.B. cannon his boy made in metal shop in H.S. One day an officer and a Coast Guard officer came to call with a golf ball that was singed on one side. My friends name was personalised on the ball`s other side. The ball was found on the deck of a freighter going down the St. Marys river here in Mich. off the great lakes. Seems the boy was shooting at the ships from shore as the boats passed by several hundred yards out. Claiming ignorance about the ball the officers left. My friend latter stood by as the boy hammered the ball cannon into scrap with a 16 lb. sledge hammer.Robert

Trash can at 100 yards is good. Built this one for a neighbor, he said he can keep five balls on 50 acres.

John, i don't suppose a fellow just picks that one up and slings it into the trunk???? So far my largest was a 2 1/2" galloper from the Encyclopedia of the Revolution. With that one we can shoot through car bodies a 1/2 mile across the river. I would like to see some details on that one, what did you use for the tube, ect.

Doubs' If I remember right that was where they said they were using so little powder to loft the balls that they watched them arch over into the target. I would like to build one full size but I sure hate trying to pack one.

A buddy owns a golf cart and we are making a mount for the cannon and a 12 volt compressor. We will play battle golf!

When the gun is finished and IF the kids will let me I will shoot you a price. I still have to finish the accessories like the powder funnel, wiper, worm and ammo chest. Usually I sell these for 250-300 with acessories depends on what the next chunk of material will run.

If the kids don't let you sell theirs....make me another one if you will. Would a shorter Coehorn style bored for a soda can be as easy (and would be prefered)?

Probably weighs between 350 and 400. The tube was hot rolled tubing with about 3/4" wall. It was ordered with a 8.5" bore and came in with a rough 8.625". Had to take some out to get the ball to fit. The old 12" lathe was stretched to the limits.

The base is 2' square X 1" thick, we found that recoil would bend a 3/8" plate after a few shots. There are three rings on the barrel just for looks out of 10" pipe. The breach is 1" thick with a 2"X2" powder chamber, all welded with 100% welds plus.
I couldn't pick it up so made a hoist to get in the truck.

With 3 ounces of powder it will put a 16 ponder out of sight. The finger holes make some strange sounds going up and coming down.

I've thought about building one of those, but have wondered about the safety of them. I know those cylinders are rated for 3K psi or so static pressure, but how do they deal with a huge pressure spike like you would have with a mortar shot?

The first mortar I saw was at a rendezvous about 1982. It was a bowling ball size with very heavy tube, about 1.250 wall. The second one I saw was made from a tube with 3/8" wall, probably some kind of well casing. It was being used with 3 ounces of powder and seemed to hold up fine. I put a new base on it for the owner as the 3/8" plate they were using didn't hold up to well.

No Patch.
No lube.
The only one I ever saw that got any cleaning had a very close fit to the ball. The balls were lathe turned to fit the bore and were so close that you could hear the air hissing out the fuse hole. It got wiped out with a damp cloth between shots. Not all balls are the same size. The black one will expand from heat more than the rest if left out in the sun. Mine got cleaned out when it rained, guess you could say I let God clean mine.
