Was discussing military rifles with a friend and the question came up if all the Israeli (IDF) Mausers were converted from standard (full length) 98 action rifles?

To my knowledge they all were K98's. Any other thoughts?

I've seen a number of them built on German M98 actions of vintages pre-K98k
era guns. Most of them were built on German and Czech WWII era actions.
Some later ones were built on FN actions like the one below. The IDF guns are
some of my favorite rifles. Good shooters too.

I agree with Doc on this one, the FN versions seemed to be the least abused.

I have seen some that were refinished and the wood refinished that looked better than the Mitchel imports.

Some I have seen at gun shows looked like they had been buried in the salt water beaches of Israel for the last 15 years.

Some were German from the war, and the Israelis bought some from Czechoslovakia (possibly others???) and the very good quality rifles from FN (like the nice one Doc has pictured above) were made under contract.

I am not sure why they are such a mixed bag, some look so bad I would never think of a second look for even under 120 bucks, and others looked almost mint (very rare).

They are safe to shoot, the 7.92 mauser has higher pressures than the .308 and were built well (new and old versions).

I bought mine 30 years ago, broken stock and plugged barrel. Cut the barrel down to 18", got the lead plug out of it, put it in a bell and carson stock and away we went. She now sports a .35 whelen barrel and is my #1 rifle for hunting.

Yep, the Israeli reworks were certainly put to hard use. I've seen nothing but 98ks.

This DOT 1945 has three brass pins through the stock near the rear action screw, a wood dowel repair behind the crossbolt and a bulged barel. I've re-barreled it with a military replacement in 12 twist and it's a good cast shooter.

This 147 1940 I bought as a bare action and rebuilt it using a spare IDF chrome-lined barrel and parts matching what the Israeli's used the best I could. The stock is beechwood. This one has accounted for one bull elk.

The DOT 1945 has a magazine spacer to keep the 7.62 cartridges to the rear. The 147 1940 has none, but both feed without a hitch.

Since I'm in a bragging mood, I'll show off my other IDF K98k that's
in good shape. This one was built on a Czech action, evidently a VZ24,
as the crest is still on it. I saved this one from sporterization that a
gunsmith had planned for it. It was a fair bribe for him, eureka! for me.

This is a pic of an IDF K98k that was built on a early German M98 action --

doc, what you have is a NEW CONTRACT BUILT FROM SCRATCH, not converted. notice the full dia front ring of the recvr, not ground/machined down.

while most are conversions, some were ordered from fn on contract(new, not rebuilds nor conversions)

Here is a pic of mine, some say I ruined it by drilling and tapping for a scope mount but what the hay, its my shooter. It dosen't seem to care if it eats commercial, reloaded or military ammo and its reasonably accurate with any of it.

These are all very nice looking IDF Mausers. I've been looking for one and this just stirs up my desire even more.
