here are some pisc of my lathe rifleing attachment. i have rifled a dozzen front
stuffer barrels. in 45, 50, 54, and 58. the last barrel i rifled, i made out of titanium.
thr first barrel i used the hook cutter and then i tried the scrapper cutter. i like the scrapper cutter better. i use carbide of an old skill saw blade. i remove the tailstock
of the lathe and this bolts in place. the barrel goes through the spindle shaft. i use
the chuck as the indexer for 3 or 6 groove.

That looks neat.....(not a machinist btw)...how did you twist the square guide rod to the right twist?

i made 2 of them one in 66 inch and the other one in 48 inch twist. clamp one end
in a good sckookum vice slide a piece of pipe over the square stock and a big cressent
wrench with a snipe handle and twist. to check for even twist like the 1-48, every
12 inches u should be level across the flat. ever see the old time rifleing guides, they were made of wood.

Thank you........I was thinking way more complicated than I needed to...hmmmm

and yes I have seen pics of the old wooden rifling gear....simply amazes me.

Nice! Maybe I should try that! Nah, got enough projects.

Brilliant! Great set up! Necessity is the mother of invention- that and the urge to DIY!
I've got a copy of an article from Muzzle Blasts magazine (back in the '80s) somewhere that shows how to build a rifling machine. Never had the space to set one up and try it. Someday.....

Very nice!

I started one similar a few years ago but did not finish. Same basic idea using twisted square stock to replace the old style wooden worm. Too much to do, too little time.

Recently I got the Toad Hall book and am getting ambitious again. If you haven't seen the site there is lots of good stuff here:

http://www.iowatelecom.net/~toadhall/

I figure that the twisted square bar is lots easier to make than a wooden worm. In fact your whole set up is very simple but effective.

Nice job.

Titanium barrel sounds interesting. A sexy metal with outstanding qualitys, just think of a octogon swamped radius groove barrel makes me want one.

I made a wood Rifleing machine years ago.
Kinda interesting, and I can say I did it!
What was interesting, it cut FAST!
I made the adjustments with pieces of paper.
I love old school stuff.

it's 32 inches long 54 cal and 15/16 across the flats. believe me it don't need
to be swamped. it weighs 2.5 lbs . whole rifle with aluminum ram rod is 6 lbs.
6 radius groove rifleing 1-66 twist for patch ball. i made this for hunting but never
too it out hunting. it kicks to much for plinking.

Sort of looks like one of my early rifling machines. I now have one with a sine bar so I can do any twist within reason. Has a motor to run the carriage back and forth and auto indexing for 6 and 8. Hand indexing for 2,3 and 4.

i made all my barrels 15/16 across the flats and all hook breach except for the 58 cal
whick were bigger for obvioud reasons. so all my stocks and locks will interfit with everything the 54 cal stainless ones will shoot all day with 60 gr FFg with olive oil
beeswax patches and no fouling. any how here she is.

Outstanding-

I can see that's probably going to be on my list of new learning someday here.

I started to build the rifling machine in a video Guy Lautard describes in a video he sells. I bought the 2'' pillow block bearings off Ebay and have not gotten any farther.

There some great threads and links on the Practical Machinist site in the Gunsmithing forum.

this was built out of obtainium. the 4 inch channel iron was salvage, the bearings were
salvaged from a alternator rebuild shop. skate wheels, the crank and bearing housing
are from a bycycle. the chain and sprokets were new.
