Someone must have had a good time with a .25 ACP and left several hundred .25 ACP brass at the range...

I turned them all into 30-30 jacketed bullets in .308 with a hollow cavity/point and some solid flat nose with the 5s dies (I typically make .308 with my 8s VLD) but I needed some for 30-30...

This is NOT as easy as using .9mm brass for .40 (and the brass is not as common (too bad).

I made a few with a full 5s and lead tip punch to shoot in the .308 for kicks.

The cases were not as easy to make even along the top as real jackets are, but 5s when not formed down completely makes a nice 30-30 bullet.

Nicly done. What weight? I found 5.7x28 brass for less then 5 cents a piece shipped. I'm pretty well stocked and no $ but I thought is was a good deal. They make great 308s too I'm sure you are aware of.

Wlecome to the board. Always love to see the new projects.

They were all about 100 to 125 (that is I made three separate batches from 100 to 125 hollow point and flat point), they shoot well from a 30-30 but I think the FPS and the .308 rifles we have they were about like surplus (not that great).

I did see the posts about the 5.7, I will start collecting that brass when I see it, not too many shooters of that round...

I have so many jackets in stock I don't see a need to buy any now...

I have over 10k of J4 jackets I had left over from when I sold my shop.

Got any 6mm or 22 jackets? I may be in touch when I get my press ;)

All of them are for .357, .308, and .452.

 Mine all mine

Way things are going, they are going to stay in my collection.

I also have a disk cutter and cup to jacket forming dies that I can make .357/.355 and then even down to .308.... (I'm too lazy and have only used the jacket maker a few times now that everything is manual)

I tried a crazy thing twice. I ran two sufficiently lubed 25acp cases through my 22RFJM dies, not at the same time of course. It took too much force than I would subject my draw dies to again, but what I got was 2 heavy and very thick walled jackets for 224 that were longer than what 22 brass makes.

FWIW,

Have you ever tried .22 mag cases?

They make a great .243 jacket, too bad they don't size UP well.

Where is this inexpensive 5.7x28 brass? My wife shoots the P90 and I'd really love to load some more on the cheap!

I was thinking when reading BT's one step die post that it would be nice to get into making 30cal and 9mm bullets. While perhaps the later may be possible with cut-down .223 brass, any other options besides the .25ACP for 30cals?

I think the best option for .308 is just to buckle down and buy jackets or buy or make a jacket making set of dies to form them from sheet copper or brass.

Could a reloading press (perhaps a modified reloading press) handle this though?

Good question - I think that the punching - the part that cuts out the "coin" would be the biggest issue. A press like the RCE, Corbin, or CH4D may be necessary for that action.

I guess I need to get out my jacket making set and video that in action.

The best option is of course the machine controlled actions like the hydraulic punching machines.

Lucky for me the P90 shooters sprayed a lot of future jackets around the ranges when that gun came out. Recently there has not been a lot of 5.7 shooting going on. Recently the cops have been leaving buckets of useless nickel plated 357 SIG brass laying around. Can't even get good scrap prices because of the plating, and you sure can't make jackets out of it!

Making jackets is time consuming. Doing it right takes time & close tolerance tooling. Berger is still in business because he charges enough to cover those costs.

The fired case to jacket game works great for some calibers. Other applications need a real jacket.

Look like a pointy version of the old Speer Plinker 100 GR 30 Cal bullet.

I am working on that now. If I can get a decent nose forming die made. It is a real PIA to work in those little tiny holes!
