I am in the process of setting up to start casting.[smilie=w:

I just slugged the bore or my H&R Buffalo Classic 45-70, according to my digital caliper and reading skills it's telling me that it slugs at .456 does this sound right?

I have been pushing 350gr and 405gr .458's through her. I want to make sure I get the right molds for it. How much oversize can I safely go with out blowing up the gun or kicking the living snot out of myself?:veryconfu

The caliper is not the best to measure. You need a good micrometer that reads to .0001" You should also upset the slug in the bore a little before pushing it out.
But don't worry about cast size too much, .458" sounds good if your groove to groove is .456". I shoot .464" out of a .459" bore.
Normally, if a round will chamber it is good to go.

My H&R .45-70 measures .4575, yours sounds like you need a micrometer. What was the size of the slug before you pushed it through the bore? It needs to be big enough to give you the truth.

All I had was a .458 cast bullet. But after further examination (with the wife's reading glasses) I get .4575 also. The old eyes didn't get the caliper on the high edge. I knew it didn't seem right.

There you go.

My Handi is just the standard one but it has given me inch and an eigth groups at 100 yards. From what I read on Graybeard's this isn't out of the ordinary, they tend to be very accurate.

I have just played with it a little (too dang cold for precision shooting right now), I was hitting a 2 1/2" wide post 4 out of 5 shots at 100 yards. I haven't heard of a single H&R that wasn't accurate.
