I have heard that some have two loads that shoot to the same point of aim or sight setting, more or less. A light plinking load and a heavier hunting load. Wondering if anyone has done this for a 30-30?

I have done it but not at the same range. I have a load using a 170 gr JFP that hits right on at 125 yards and another load consisting of a 115 gr Lyman 31108 bullet and a charge of 8 gr of unique that hits on at about 35 yards. I use this light load for popping grouse while hunting deer.

Never tried that myself !

Always had one rifle sighted in with one load and another rifle in the same chambering sighted in with another .

Be good practice to huny tree rats in the off season too. may try the 115 grain load as I have a mold of that size. Thankyou

I've done this with 30-30,30-06 and 257 Roberts. A little work with light bullets will shoot spot on at short range while having the long range zero unchanged.
I carry the light ones loose and the hunting ammo in the rifle. Bunnies and tree rats often wait for the ammo change and I get some good camp meat. The Guadalupe Mountains have really fat and big Cottontail bunnies. I hated to shoot them with the 165grn J-words so I tried a load with 311359s and 12-15 grns of 2400. Shot POA at 50 yards and tiny (<1/2") groups. Bore slugged .308 but the rifle(an old 1949) Model 70 liked .310 better.
I've heard all my life about not shooting j-words and cast without cleaning between types. If I don't shoot a lot of either it doesn't seem to me that it makes a hill of beans. I wish I hadn't had a brain fart and sold that rifle......sigh....
Maybe I'll find another that will wad 'em up like that again.

Mike Venturino wrote an article in "Reloader"? where he has not seen mixing jacketed and lead to matter. As I shoot cast for deer in my 30-30 or 303 Brit it is not a concern. I think it may have started because some of the rifles used to have a great deal of copper fouling and needed cleaning for accuracy with either. Who knows, maybe the residue left from lead bullets may alleviate copper fouling? The sight in for a small critter should be more precise than for a larger game animal. Some sight in up to 3" high at 100 yards for deer.

In my 20" 336 I shoot a 150grain Jacketed bullet with a max load of IMR 3031 for my hunting load and a 170 grain cast bullet over enough Red Dot to get me almost to 1,000 fps. Out to 50 yards the 1" groups overlap.

In my 336 Cowboy I shoot the Ranch Dog 165gr to just under 1500 fps for Levergun silhouette and shoot the Lee Soup Can over Bullseye to get me a very quiet, grouse killing load (out to 50 yards) that jogs along around 900 fps. Using the RD bullet and pushing it to hunting speeds the groups print about 2" higher.

Out to 25 yards a 0' buckshot over a .3cc Lee scoop of Bullseye prints the same or just under most factory 30-30 and 30-06 ammo I've shot.

I have no problem shooting cast over jacketed, but then I paper patch. The PP bullets are also a very good way to clean the copper fouling out of a barrel.

Whit...good info in your post...I'll give em a try. Thanks. Rod

In the Springfield '03, using the standard M2 bullet (152 gr FMJ) and 17 gr of SR 4759; the rifle will shoot to the the point of aim with the battle sight (the notch) ie with the ladder sight down. With full power 150 gr JSP's or the standard M2 load, I use the ladder's 200 yd setting. This allows hunting for deer with the 200 yd ladder, and using the notch battle sight for a good 25 - 50 yd grouse and rabbit load. The 17 gr SR 4759 load is roughly 1700 fps.

With the 03-A3, the same 17 gr SR 4759 load will shoot to the sights at 25-50 yds, with a rear sight setting of 500 yds. With the normal full power 150 gr - 2750 fps jacketed deer load, I use the 200 yd setting. Windage is with in an inch.
