Price and availability of J word being what they are I have been thinking about boolit loads for my M77 Ruger. I have Lyman 280412 and 280473. Cast in straight WW the RN casts at 141 grs and the spitzer at 130. thats as cast sans lube or gas check. they mic. about a thou. oval at .280-.281. At one point on this forum it was reccomended that boolits be sized befor heat treating then lubed after, any reason for this? Also what Lube for pushing these at resonable 270 velocity? Maybe Carnuba Red? I have loaded cast in pistol for many years and reduced velocity loads in 303 Brit, 30-40 Krag, 30-30, 30-06, 35 Rem. but really getting into high velocity with cast is new ground but thought heat treated was probably a place to start. Any one got advice or comments, fire away.

Big Dave,
The reason for sizing before heat treating is that it will be a lot easier to size before they harden up.
Haven't tried anything in my .270 yet. I do have the RCBS 27-130-FN.
Like you, have been doing a lot of shooting in the .35 Rem, 30-30 and 30-06.
Spent most of the summer shooting various .45 Colt loads.
As far as lube, I've used Thompson Blue Angel and LBT Soft Blue up to around 2000 fps.

I had problems with 280412 - it has a short bearing surface and an undersized nose that did not ride the lands in my rifles. If your 412 is anything like the one I had I think you might have better success with 280473.

I have been using Bullshop's Speed Green as a lube. Carnuba Red should also work.

We size before heat treating because running them through a sizer die work softens the alloy, reducing the effect of heat treating. And it an be difficult to run them through the sizer.

I have been having good luck with loads in the 2000-2100 fps range with oven heat treated bullets and powders in the burn range of 4198. I suspect I could go a bit faster if I put more work into the load development, but I just haven't had the time.

Below is a target shot with my 270 loads with boolits cast in a 75/25 mix WW/Lino without HT.
I have not cronoed them but they should be about 2100/2200.
The 9 ring in the top target is 1"

There's 5 rounds in the bottom target but it looks like 4, shot at 100 yards.
