Been watching the fish fryers and deep fryers at the area wallyworlds with the idea of using one for melting wheel weights into ingots. Tonight I noticed they were $20, so I bit. The one I got reads Backyard Classics Fish Fryer Set Model 2700W. It has a 21" tall cast iron frame.

Anxious to get out my dutch oven and fire it up. Anyone foresee any difficulty in reaching sufficient temperature?

Here's the units they are clearancing locally for a Hamilton:

Hope to do just that (pics.) Thanks for the affirmation, the description on the box wasn't very detailed.

Cleveland, TN newer wallyworld still has 3 or 4 left if anyone is in the area.

That's what I use, it works great! Just make sure to scrap the pot that comes with it.

DO NOT SMELT IN ALUMINUM!!

Got carried away buying dutch ovens, so I'm squared away on that.

Tall 50 cal ammo cans, steel? I'd feel safer with the cast iron dutch ovens.

Hey, I didn't throw my pan away - I actually do fry fish/boil shrimp some when I'm not cooking wheelweights !

Just fry them in the same pot as your lead....the residue leaves a beautiful black ring on the gums, and it's vitamin fortified too!!! :bigsmyl2:

Sounds like I should shop a little here. Just picked up my first bucket of WW, FREE!

Since it is about 10 degrees here I won't be in backyard anytime soon but am wondering. Should I sort through the weights and maybe even break the clips off or do you just skim them off in the smelting process?
Thanx
Kevin

Kevin,

This is what I've been going by in making preparations to smelt down the 300# of wheel weights I've accumulated into ingots for the production pot:

Lots of outstanding info in the classics forum above, which is where I found this link.

As the others have said, the burner is certainly adequate and the price is more than just attractive...

But I'd put some cross bracing on those legs before I put 100+ pounds of molten metal on it.

Those legs are described as welded steel, not cast, and altho the legs are not spread(for balance and stability) they should be ok? Mine is similar(called turkey cooker), 80,000 btu and I (a senior) usually working alone, can do 400 lbs in maybe 5 hours. Beware the dust and clips you skim off-stay upwind. Heavy aluminum muffin tins work ok as ingot molds if you don't bend them too regularly.

I don't think the strength of the legs themselves is a problem, I'm concerned that they will twist off at their attachment point and spill the pot. A thin piece of strap steel between them near the bottom would make the unit a lot stronger.

Only ones I know of in this area is foot of Signal Mtn and they are 49.00 there. Thats what I was told when I called today. I like to pick one up on clearance. I believe I had seen them on clearance right at xmas for 20 from 46 but there was not enough info on the box that I passed as I was not real sure what I needed and the size i thought maybe not right. Live and learn.

If you can't stand on it and jump up and down some it's not strong enough.

Well if you're 6'2 and 300lbs, I don't think I would stand on it and jump up and down. I'm just saying, I wouldn't.
