Recently I was lucky enough to locate a Lipsey, Ruger 44 Special 5.5 " revolver.

I love my Ruger.

I don't love those tiny factory grips that come on the revolver.

I have fairly large hands and they don't work out very well with those tiny grips on the Ruger.

Recently , Dale53 put me onto the idea of buying Pach Grips made for a Colt SAA. They aren't made anymore and are hard to fine. Fortunately , I found a pair, new in the box.

A little bit of Dremel tool work and presto ! ! I'm in business.

Thanks Dale53 for your help.

The grips don't fit 100% perfect, but they fit about 97% and that's good enough for me. I can shoot this revolver now and feel comfortable with it.

Here is a photo showing the factory grips on the 44 Special :

Not only are the grips narrow and thin, but there is no place for my little finger :

Here are the Pach Colt SAA grips on the Ruger :

Now , I've got something for my big hands to hold on to
( also notice that NOW I've got a place for my little finger ) :

i like the pachmeyer presentation grips if i can get them.
the hogues with the little filler under the hammer are my choice for the blackhawks.
now if i could get the pach's with the little filler the world would be a much better place.
i hate finger grooves on a revolver handle.

These grips will make my Ruger .44 Spec. much easier for me to handle ! !

Ben, I did a similar thing with my early-series Colt Police Positive and a set of Colt D-frame Pachmayr Presentation grips. The set also fits the Pocket Positive x 6" and the 1933 Detective Special, but look out of place on the snubgun.

Dep. AL :

Where my grip panel halves meet, there is a small hair line gap.

To the " purist " this would not be suitable.......Doesn't bother me in the least however.

They feel good and are going to shoot good ( when this cold weather breaks enough for me to get to the range )

Ben;
I was MORE than happy to help out. "What Cheer" is the gentleman that discovered this and forwarded a pair to me.

I, too, am grateful!

Fortunately my hands are small enough that the stock grips on my Lipsey's 44 SPL fit me just fine.

The only problem was that the checkering was fiercely attacking my hand any time I shot loads that greater than 5.0gr of Bullseye with a 250gr Keith boolit.

I ended up purchasing smooth rosewood grips from Ruger's online store (I had to buy grips for the New Vaquero to get the proper size) and that solved the problem. I can now shoot high test loads without having chunks of my palm removed.

Ben--

I'm all about utility over fashion statements, for certain. I'll figure something out for that DetSpec, and now that the cataract problem is resolved that project will move up the list a few notches.

Remember that black cloth electrical tape that was popular 30 years ago?

I ran into an old Captain at the police range one day. His gun looked like hell. He had busted sombody in the chops with the butt of his gun and cracked the grip.

So with some of the aforementioned tape he wrapped the grips until it fit his hand good and held the wood together. He liked it so much that he just left it that way. Ugly as a witch but fits his hand good and sticks pretty well. Over time the black sticky stuff hardens up some and make a fine grip for a handgun.

Only problem I see is: that I haven't seen that kind of tape in years.

Whereisitat?

I shot Whitworth's converted SRH in .500 Linebaugh yesterday. The gun has a short, fluted barrel but has rubber grips that fill behind the trigger guard. I think they are Hogue.
The gun weighs 48 oz and I can tell you it has a LOT of recoil but the grips did not hurt my knuckle, they just sting my palm.
Jack Huntington made the conversion and I can only say it is BEAUTIFUL! :holysheep

I too had problems getting my pinky on the grip of my Blackhawk . . . I never liked shooting it with hot 357 mags, as I couldn't hold on to it!

So . . . I got a pair of Houge grips, added 2oz, but that is fine, now I like to shoot it, and it shoots pretty good!

Now!:

If you look closely in the last picture you can see where the frame ends, and the grip continues . . .

The factory grips were beveled up, so that gave me even less room too!

Do you want to sell your take off grips. I just got a Super Blackhawk that has the Hogue Grips on it. I hate em.:bigsmyl2:

Crash, I can't bring myself to wrap cloth tape around the stocks of that minty old DetSpec. I installed a Tyler T-Grip with the factory stocks, and that improved things some--wadcutters are nice to shoot, but the little critter still jumps around with 158 grain full-potential SWCs.
