I am awaiting my .314 hollow point mold(group buy). I have read using 20-1 is good for HP from 1200fps to 1400fps. I also read 30-1 is good under 1000fps.My 32mag should be able to get 1200fps with a 100g HP. Elmer Keith liked 16-1 alloy I plan to shoot the 32 mag and My 41mag at about 1250 or so Any suggestions on alloy? Thanks

I have settled on 25-1 for 900-1200fps loads & 20-1 above 1200fps. You can see abov 1200fps I start to lose the nose of that 44mag.

Glad you posted the picks and listed the alloy, in this case 25-1
This would indicate that one doesn't need a harder alloy at velocities up to 1200 fps. Should be around 8 0r 9 brinell hardness
Great pics, Thanx!!

What do you suppose 50/50 alloy is in hardness??

They do run about 9BHN. I have tried 50/50 ww & lead & get sim results but the remaining antimony still makes the bullet a bit brittle & I lose some of the expanding nose. So for serious LHP, I just use lead & tin.

I kind of like an alloy that will blow off a nose. Ive found that when the nose comes off the pedals do as much damage as a mushroomed bullet and the shank of the bullet tends to penetrate deaper then a mushroomed bullet. Kind of like a nos partition and we all know they work. Most of my cast is done from alloys ranging from 5050 ww/lyno to ww plus 2 percent tin.

The theory is sound, but it depend on when & how much of the nose blows off. If it is on impact, then you get a huge surface wound & a small, bullet diameter wound track. If it can hold together for several inches of penetration, then I agree, losing the nose would not necessarily be a bad thing. A balance would be a shallow cup point that gives slight expansion but then drives the bullet deep.
