A well known design I saw several places online. Works very good. The stop rods are 1/2".

I got material to do 4 of these large chip shields. There'll be two small ones to sit on top of the vise front and back. Pretty much to surround the work area and contain the mess. 8" long x 7 3/4" tall. 3/16" lexan. 3/4" square aluminum with 2 neodymium magnets in the base, 1/2" diameter x 3/8" thick, each 12.? pounds each.

Works on the lathe, too.

Nice, I like the magnet idea

What you MAY find, is that the magnets might leave residual magnetism in your table, which of course, will attract steel chips.

I'm debating these magnets. I'm doing a lengthy session with some steel in the mill now so we'll see how annoying it'll become. I may rethink this and use clamps instead.

Back when I worked as a machinest, I made several chip shields out of polycarbonate. Used a heat gun and a a two foot dia. something, and softened the plastic so it took the curve. After cooling and trimming on a bandsaw, mounted a bar on the lathes and used a sliding tube as a hinge on the rear. You could flip the shield up and out of the way to work on the chuck or mount things. A stop was built in the hinge so it returned to the same place. Make a couple of the shields for the plastic gets scuffed up after a year or so of use. Best regards, the toolman.
