Alliant makes Unique. They consider it a shotgun powder but it works in a 45-70. Here's a link for Hodgdon, might find some 4895 data there: http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

A copy of Lyman 48 should have plenty of load data for you. Maybe search the levergun or single shot sections for recommendations.

I have 340gr RCBS and use 16gr unique which gives around 1375fps. This load has very low deviation due to powder position which is important in such a large case as 45-70. I used 45gr 4895 but it burned dirty. Accuraate but dirty.

I used to shoot 9gr w/ an over powder wad when CAS allowed the 45-70 for general match shooting. I now like 3031 but am trying some others looking for THE lead bullet load w/ that same bullet.

I like Unique for all my 45-70 bullets which include 292gr. Lyman 322gr. Lyman 400gr. Lyman 500 gr. Lee. I think I have a 405gr. Lee some where but never had much luck with it, it was probably undersize. Most of my Unique loads run from 13 to 17 grs. 13 grs. behind the 500gr. Lee will shoot 2" or a little more at 100 yds. The recoil is about like someone putting thier hand on your shoulder and giving you a little shove. I have a converted Black Powder action Sharps ( original ). it will handle loads that will make your eyes water but I keep it on the light side mostly. I also have a new Pedisorli Remington Rolling Block and it will handle loads that I do not want to shoot.

shot both loads today the 16 gr load was 2inches at 100,the 17 was 1 1/4.probably will shoot better but it was 20 degrees at 8 this morning so range time was short and sweet.i wonder how fast these a runnin?
