I have a nice Argentine rifle that has been sporterized in a good way and the rear sight was a Lyman 48. The sight disks were missing when I got the rifle and someone had tapped out the hole to 10-32 thread, but I couldn't fine one long shank insert to fit. While I was snowed in this weekeknd I got busy and made up a set of sight disks in various apretures. Not having any 12L14 3/4" stock on hand I just used a set of old #1 grade (soft) bolts for stock. Picture 1 shows the bolt after shaping and while drilling the apeture. # 2 and #3 are the disks before and after bluing.

Nice job, what size apertures did you make.

Nice work. How did we get anything done before QC tool posts?

I still have a set of lanterns and bars for the old South Bend.

I made a set of 3... 1/16, 3/32 and 7/64" with disks at 1/2" and 5/8" I will mostly use the largest one with my old eyes but on a real bright day I could use the small one for target work.

I shoot a lot of small bore and the standard aperture size that Anschutz puts in the rear sight is 1.1mm or .044". I would suggest trying to make as close too that size because you can always open it up.

On my pure target rifles I have some small holes but with my old eyes anymore if I don't have the light just right I can't use them. Since this is not a target gun per se I stuck with what I knew i could see. I had to rebuild the whole sight on my Sharps as the largest hole I could get was 1/16" of and inch. For normal hunting I really like the 7/64th hole as it is almost a ghost ring and I can still see through it after 4 PM. I had a Redfield Peep on my target 22 and finlly went to a scope last year because unless the light was good and bright I could only se fuzz, it wouldn't work for me indoors at all.

Nicely done! Long live the do-it-yourselfer!!

Interesting that the thread size is 10-32. Vintage Lyman and Redfield sights use a real bas**rd thread size of 7/32-40. Did that change, or did someone fill the hole and re-drill/tap for 10-32? I have made a couple of sights and used a 7/32-40 tap so I could use standard sight discs. I found that by going to Apertures-N-More and buying a new disc for $10 or so was more cost effective than making my own, although I do intend to do that once I figure out the gearing to cut that thread!

KCSO, I was thinking of a target size just for load development and sighting in, then change the aperture too the size you are going to use.

My next one is going to be a Hadley style with a variable rotating inner disk.

That sounds great, I was thinking of making one myself with a narrower range of holes.

It is also worthy of consideration to use a tapered reamer on the hole in the aperture...that make the edge of the hole a nice sharp edge, although you do not really "see" the rear aperture.

Nice job though :-)....
