Zinc melts at 787° F. Keep your lead below 700° and the zinc will float on top without melting.

RCBS thermometers are a good brand. Watch your first melt, for signs of melting and then note the temperature reading. It should show about 600 to 625 degrees. If it does you know your gauge is reasonably close. I keep my melt down to about 650-675 degrees to stay on the safe side. Some time ago I saw a post from a member that had been doing this for years and he suggested that one stay below 700 degrees to be fairly sure not to contaminate your melt. It has worked flawlessly for me.

run your burner real low, and watch the pot close, as soon as lead starts pooliing in the bottom, slowly increase until the "slush" goes away, when the slush goes away, immediately use your metal kitty litter scooper (avail at meijer for like 3 bucks, it's Gods gift to smelters) to clean out clips and floating weights. should be, depending on your exact WW alloy, between 550 and 650, but every potful will be a little different. the BIG thing is, KEEP IT UNDER 700 UNTIL YOU CLEAN OUT THE FLOATERS
