Anyone shooting 200 grain bullets in their fixed sighted SA? How fast do you have to push them to get them to shoot point of aim?

Most of the data I have is for Cowboy levels. It all prints low and I don't want to file my front sight.

TIA

I bet you can not shoot them slow enough to get them to hit to the sights. Most are set up to hit something like a 255gr gr bullet at 850fps. Normally to get a bullet to raise the point of impact you have to slow it down and I think the adjustment would just be too much. I know I can just barely adjust the rear sight on my 45 colt Mountain Gun for 200gr bullets to hit POA at 25 yards.

Try running a 255gr gr at 825-850fps and see how they work.

Fowler,
You are correct. A 255 grain at that speed or just a little faster prints point of aim.

I suspect you are probably right about the 200 grain bullet too. I was hoping faster might close the gap but it sounds like the opposite might be the result. Bummer.

My two Uberti SSAs shoot to POA at 25 yards with 250 gr slugs going 850fps. With the same powder charge (6 gr Red Dot) They shoot to POA at 15 yards. Frankly I never have had a problem hitting cowboy targets even with out using the sights and I almost never see them setup behound 25 yards or so. At 25 yards when bulls eye shooting I hold at six o'clock with my 200 gr loads and they mostly stay in the black. I use a lot of lee 200 gr SWCTL bullets in my Ubertis.

So far all the SA's I've encountered shoot low out of the box. The last three I have owned were 10" low. One was a 45 the others were 44-40's I had to file the sights on mine. If you're careful with a file and keep the original shape I see nothing wrong with it. I shoot cowboy but I like to shoot loads near factory velocities to "keep it real". They all shoot paper just fine to for a single action. Groups of less than 2" at 25 yards

Good luck

A fixed sight single action should come from the factory with the front sight a little tall. Easy to take a little off, not so easy to put a little on.

I have shot 185gr out of mine with 231, but I don't remember how much.
Mine has adjustable sights.

http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp Has load data online. I don't know if you are after 185 or 200 grain.
