First of all,my plans are for using ONLY in my Ruger #1 .45/70 which I bought from Cyrus.
Now,I have the Lyman #457125's and may try the postell mould at some pouint.
Is there a safe and fairly decent load for Unique with these heavier bullets?:?:
Thanks Folks,
Jeff

I just looked in my Lyman manual
#457125 and Unique

10.0 gr is listed at 888 FPS at 14,100 CUP
14.8 gr is listed at 1153 fps at 33,700 CUP

Both loads say to use 1/2 gr Dacron wad

Never shot any Unique with this boolit
But I have burned several lbs of Unique 11 gr at a time with a 350 gr boolit ( with some dacron )
At around 1000 fps it is a pure joy to shoot
And out of the TC 14" Contender barrel , accurate enough to shoot for IHMSA

I have shot the same bullet with 15 gr of Unique in a Ruger #1 They shot ok and were safe but accuracy was not as good as I got with slower powders. Accuracy was OK for plinking or hunting and 1199 fps with a 500 gr bullet will go clean through most game without a problem.

I think using UNQ in a .45/70 case with a heavy bullet is a total mixmatch and possibly even an accident waiting to happen...... JMO, Dennis

I use 11.6 gr. Unique behind the cast ca 400 gr bullets for a very mild 50 yard paper punchinhg load in my Winchester Model 1886. Accurate and very easy on the shoulder.

No Dennis, it's not. You may be thinking of the problems with reducing charges of rifle powder in rifle cartridges. That can be risky.

Unique is very easy to ignite and doesn't gives problems in the 45-70, even with loads down to three or four grains.

I use 10.5 grains of Bartletts #105 (think Unique from what I have tested it) with 325 RCBS (345 ready to fire with my alloy) 1105 fps and with Ranch Dogs 350 grain boolit (378 ready to go in my alloy) 1099 fps,
No filler, Dacron or anything.

Unless you just love the heavier boolits you can significantly cut lead use with the lighter slugs

Try 4gr Unique with a .457 round ball, very quite and will knock a tree rat out of a tree at 25 yds and go completely through. I got 490fps from this load, use pillow stuffing as a filler.

yep, pistol powder in REDUCED loads are pretty much a normal activity. i have not used unique yet, but i have used several others in my 30-30, 45-70, and 300 win mag. toughest part is finding load data. i would not want to just guess how much to put in a case. can you say russian roulet w / 5 cartridges?!
