Well, last weekend I got bored.
Striped the M1 down and threw it in the dishwasher.
Here it is post wash and after six coats of BLO/mineral spirits.
Did not use any steelwool or sandpaper.
Enjoy.

Hey why dont we have an M1 thread?

There are a number of threads on M1's and cast bullets. The search function is your friend:

How long and where did you let the wood dry? Has the Frau stopped yelling at you yet? Nice looking M1. What if any dishwasher soap did you add?Robert

Interesting approach. Has to be kinder to the wood than the Easy Off oven cleaner
that is often recommended.

Easy off is ok IF you remember to give it a vinegar water bath immediately afterwards. Folks forget that step and have problems with the wood and the finish afterwards. The vinegar neutralizes the Easy Off. Then a warm clean water bath for 30 seconds or so clears any salts left by the neutralizing process.

I let the wood dry for 48 hours in the house. Its 74* in here.
She just stood there with her mouth open and in disbelief as I put it in the dishwasher.
I know she is going to have me commited one day.
I just used regular dishwashing powder. Put it on the heavy cycle.
If my daughter had a better cam. The photos do it no justice.
here is a couple before the wash.

It is a nice looking M1. The one I shoot is a CMP field grade Greek return I got three years ago. The stock has lots of dents but was not oil soaked so I just steamed out the dents as much as possible added several coats of BLO and then shoot it when ever in the mood to do some blasting with an M1. The only thing I had to do was tighten up the barrel splines that the gas cylinder goes over. This tightened up the gas cylinder so it does not warble now.
