I have found in my assorted goodies two boxes of primers. They are "remington umc" No.8 1/2. now 8 1/2 is a western number. I also have some ,in an identical style box labled 9 1/2 which I have an "LR" marked on. These primers mike .210 so they are large something,I assume pistol ,but I don't know for sure. A little help from someone would be appreciated. thanks.

It was a long time ago that I started reloading, but as I remember the Remington primers I used for large rifle were 9 1/2M (M for magnum).
8 1/2 is a designation I'm not familiar with.

You marked em LR surely that is not large rifle-yea sounds like pistol primers.

Could 'LR' stand for Large Revolver?

I will answer my own question. In real small print it says " for high pressure smokeless powder rifle cartriges" on the 8 1/2 box. On the 9 1/2 box it says "Adapted to 30 caliber government rifle cartriges". Thanks for the comments.

easy way to find out. take known primer and a mystery primer, prime a case and chamber and fire. compare them, even though they are not the same, primers of the same type will have similar firing pin marks, mainly depth.

Take out you mike and measure the hight of the primers. Rifle primers are taller than pistol primers. You will then know if they are large rifle or large pistol.

Throw them out. If it's just 200 primers.

Don't throw them out.
buy wax bullets and have some indoor fun on a rainy or cold day

I don't know how old yours are, but I'm working on 10K various CCI primers bought at an estate sale. They were dated by the original buyer in the range from 1973 to 1980. So far they have functioned exactly as the new ones I have.

Hey, for $4 per 1000, I'm gonna use them up!
