I inherited what I believe to be a M1903A1. The original wooden stock has been cut-off 5 3/4" forward of the rear sight. I would like to refit it with a full wooden stock. I am new to rifles in general, I don't know if I have an A1 or an A3, I don't know what stocks will fit my rifle, I'm just looking for advice. Here are some pictures of the rifle, and the remaining portions of the upper attachments/sling swivel.

ke7chv,

From the position of the rear sight, the rifle is an 03 and not a 03A3. The 03A3 has a rear sight at the back of the receiver, behind (closer to the butt of the rifle) where the shells go in.

You should be able to find a stock pretty easily. An original might be costly while a reproduction will be somewhere around $150. Check out the CMP (http://www.odcmp.com) site for a lot of 03 information.

I remember checking on stocks for 1903's and remember that some stocks required more fitting than others.

Here is a link that I saved that has some stocks, however I cannot remember if this was the better stocks (it has been a while )

It's an Mod 1903

I've heard Dupage makes a pretty good stock. A lot less fitting than Boyds,

You may want to do some checking though. Others have said that Boyd's quality has been better. Amazing what some competition will do!!

Post pics when you get it restored. I love seeing these converted back to military rifles. Fortunately, you still have the sight.

I got a Boyd's stock a few years back.
A rather good looking stock, I did have to fit it. I would rather have done the fitting like I did, than add material.
It was just enough undersized on the fit that I could really customize it.
