Smoked Hide (Does Anyone Do This?)

I would like to smoke a deer hide. Does anyone out there do this, and if so some pointers would be welcome.

Edit: And for the wise guys, I don't want to smoke it in a pipe. We all know that would be far too addictive.

I use glue to attach the edges together, into a bag like thing. Then stitch a cloth tube to the bottom opening. Start a smoky fire in a camp stove, and suspend the hide over the pipe, with the tube tied around the pipe to contain the smoke. Watch your heat, don't want it too hot. When the color is bleeding through the hide well, turn it inside out, and smoke that side.

I would imagine you are talking brain tan hides? Commercial tanned don't smoke quite as well, but it can be done.
