View Full Version : 10/22 extractor question
I have a 10/22 that the extractor will not always catch the rim of the case. If I have a miss-fire it won't pull the round out, I have to lock the bolt back and work the round out with my finger or knife blade.
Is there a way to make the extractor work? Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

Is it the original barrel?

The biggest failing on the 10/22 is the factory extractor. Pot luck really if one works OK out the box.
If you take the bolt out the extractor should be able to retain a 22 round as you turn the bolt thru 360 degree. If the round falls off the extractor is no good.
Fit a match extractor to fix the problem. Clark or Volquartson.
Its possible to heat and bend the factory one but a match one is only $15 or so.

PS Make sure the extractor slot in the barrel is clean and that the barrel clamp isnt loose!

Try replacing it with a good after market one. It made a huge differance in mine and it only takes a couple of minutes to change. FB

Some years back I put a different barrel on my 10-22 and it supposedly had a tighter chamber. I put in a titanium extractor right away and never had any problems. I don't recall if I had tried it with the original extractor. Believe I got all the parts from Midway.
Thanks everyone. To answer some questions it didn't work with the original match ruger barrel and it doesn't work with the magnumlite barrel that is on it now. Guess I need to buy a new extractor.

Get a new one.
Simpler overall.
While you have the bolt, and extractor out, headspace the bolt.
I like to run my headspace at .042. Factory was .065. Match is .040.
A simple disc sander with a table to make square. Makes a big difference.
When I got my Bentz chambered barrel, I had to put lapping compound on the cases to get them to cycle easily. I fired about 20 with lapping compound and it went great.
I also pinned my reciever, and bedded the action. Pinning is simple.
Works real well.

I put a Volquartsen exact edge extractor in mine a few years ago after it started fumbling extraction. It was an easy fix, maybe 15 min, and hasn't failed to extract since then.
I have a volquartsen extractor on order and a match trigger spring package. Hope it fixes the problem. Also joined the rimfirecentral web site, thanks for all the help.

It could simple as the angle of the extractor is negative to the rim. Do as mag44uk suggest to check the extractor. If you have a negative angle simply recut to have positve engagement of the extractor.
