I have been casting for my auto handguns for about a year and would like to find a good cast boolit for my in-line .50 caliber, 1:32 twist in the .452-.457 range, 300-330 grain and either a large metplat or a hollowpoint for deer hunting out to 125yds.

The Lyman 457122 "Gould Express" really intrigues me, but I'm thinking that I should be looking for either a gas checked design or bevel base so the sabot will release clean.

The Keith Nose .452-300 looks about ideal, but it looks like a custom mold.

I'm curious as to what others have found successful as a saboted cast boolit.

GMT210, I have a 26" bbl'ed. 1:28" twist .50cal. Knight Bighorn rifle that does very well with the Lyman #429421 or RCBS #44-250K and MMP sabots (www.mmpsabots.com). I use loose powder, either Pyro. RS or more typically, FFg (Goex or Graf & Sons).

My best friend has the Lyman Plains Rifle with the 1/32 twist barrel. He's shooting the Mihec 44/444 boolit out of it with great accuracy in a sabot.

I've shot a few with the 457122 in pure lead sized to 452 for use in a sabot. Over 150 grain of pyrodex pellets it thumps on both ends. Open up a deer like nothing else I've ever used- and shoot very well too.
Don't be afraid to experiment.

If you go down the main index page to the vendor/sponsors area, BRP has a couple of molds designed specifically for sabots in the .50's that might meet your requirements. As Maven stated, the 429421 also works well, but it doesn't meet your .452/.457 & 300-330 gr.

I have an Encore, Knight, and a Traditions and shoot my cast saboted in all 3. Years ago I started casting with a Lee TL 230 gr mold for my 45 auto. It actually casts out closer to 240gr. I have been using them, cast as pure lead. They are very accurate, especially in the Encore. Never thought of using the 457122. That would be devastation!

It has been a few years but I have used the Lyman SWC 215 Gr 430 GC bullet sans the GC. The load was 75 volume Gr. Pyrodex. This was in my Traditions 50 Cal traditional cap lock with 1 in 48" twist. It would shoot 3" to 4" groups. Like I said it has been a while but I think over my Chrony it was graphing at 1700 to 1800 FPS. I never shot a deer with it but out to a 100 yrds. it think it would do quite well.

i have been using my 45acp 230g rn boolits in a sabot in my m/l for target practice. i concentrate on group size, rather than the p.o.i on the target. i would not use them for hunting. i would use a propper projectile for that. but, i got a deal on 1000 sabots, and the 45 boolist are CHEAP to make, so they make a perfect plinking round. also, you have to be careful (if i understand it right) about what size bullet you put into a sabot. if the bullet is to large, it will increase the side force on the sabot. probably resulting in a lot of melted plastic in the barrel at the least. that may, or may not affect follow up shot accuracy. i would also think it would be quite hard to start / seat as well.
