Looking to cast some boolits for sabots. Want a real sharp FLAT NOSE for brush and NOT under 300 grains. Any thoughts without ordering and waiting yet another custom mold?

I have a Rapine 451-500, it casts a nice FLAT nose boolit with about 7 grease grooves. PM me if you want a few to try.

Go to the vendot/sponsor forum. Quite a few of the sponsors carry several molds suitable. I use the BRP mold that throws the 300 flat nose for sabots. Shoots real good in my MLs. They are: BRP custom molds. Their url is http://www.brp.castpics.net I also shoot the 270 gr REAL that they have. Can't shoot quite as fast as the sabot but it is EXCELLENT in close, accurate and powerful. 10 ga

The Lee 452-300 GC boolit seems like a good choice.

Try a Lee .457-340-F mold and size to .451

I sized some 350 grn. .459 Ranch Dogs down to .452 (a sturdy press is highly recommended) and put them on top of 100 grn 2f in my old Knight BK-92. I used Knight black sabots.
At 50 yards they shot great, around an inch or a little less; but at 100, for some reason, things opened up (minute of pie plate).
I'm still going to experiment further as I'm not sure there weren't other factors involved.
Speed was 1500fps.
I'm also going to try my 454424's (260 grn.) with said same load.
I think either projectile will penetrate about the same on a whitetail, simply because they will both run out of whitetail to penetrate.

How about that Lyman "Whitworth" with a nice round flat nose, casts out a litle over .451, and weighs roughly 500 grains? Dixie carries it. BvT

I am getting the NOE .460-350 group buy mold. I was thinking of doing the same thing as you. Did the boolits you used have a gas checked base? I read in this muzzleloading forum. that boolits with gas checked bases, without the gascheck. shot better than plain based boolets in sabots.

..............Several of these 45 cal rifle boolits (.458+") have been lubed and then run up through a Lee type .451" die and used in my Whitworth. However as Baron von Trollwhack mentioned, the Lyman 457121-PH on the far right drops a bit over .452" from my mould and weighs a bit over 480grs. It is a SUPERB boolit in both the Whitworth and Rigby.

Second from the left is the same design but paper patched with 9lb airmail onionskin paper. As done it's a wonderfull boolit in 45 cal rifles.

BRP also has a 400 gr flatnose designed for sabots. Call them they are good to work with and have always been quick on orders. 10 ga

Lee 300 gr sized to 450 in a sabot and 100 gr 2FG shoots end to end thru Ohio white tail. 1 inch group in my persuit, and will shoot one ragged hole in the Wolf of my son at 50 yards

Rayzer,
Yes, the Ranch Dog is gas checked. I don't know if checked bullets are supposed to shoot better out of sabots, but they certainly seat better.
Mine shot great at 50 yards but I was pretty disappointed at 100. I wonder if the 1:28 twist in my old Knight is keeping them stable. Don't know if the fact that it's a 1:28 in a .50 bore instead of a .45 bore has anything to do with it or not.
100 grains FF was the only load I tried, I don't know if it would do any better with less, and I'm not shooting any more.
