Cookie cutter for .44 (.431 or so)

I want to try pan lubing some .44 boolits, and was wondering what would make a good cookie cutter.

Presently, I am rubbing Felix lube onto my .44 boolits and letting the sizer wipe off the excess.

I'd like to try pan lubing to see if I can avoid using the sizer, or at least reduce the frequencly of removing the extra lube around the sizer.

I made a bunch out of brass rod. Drill it out and lap to just remove lube. I sharpen the end that goes over the boolit and just keep pushing them in until they come out the top.

See if you can find a 444 case and measure the ID of the case, if it's the right size just cut the rim end off, a 30-06 case should be easy to find, cut the end off and check the ID.

I use a cut off 7.62x54R case. I drilled out the spent primer and put a rod in to push the bullet out.

I've done that with a fired 30-30 case for pln lubed .311 bullets, it can be done with 44,444, or cut off 308/30-03 cases, by having the case open at both ends you just keep pushing it over bullets till they pop out the top, then use something to push the remainding bullets out the cut-off case

Interesting 44Man -- about how long is the brass rod?
It only needs to be a couple of inches long. Here are a few I made. One is fancy because I run a lot of 45-70 boolits through it.

If you make one from cases you will need to have enough of something to hold on to, so the bigger case are better.
Your hand will get cramped from using too small of a cutter, if you do very many boolits at one time.
Use fired cases and don't resized them- they will be nearly perfect as fired and might just take a little expansion with a long tapered tool to open it up a little more.
If you cut off the right cases at the right spot, they will only need trimmed and deburred to work.
Open the primer end completely for push through- it's faster.
Brass tubing of the proper diameter works well, too.

I like 44man's fancy handle- I think I am going to look into putting handles on my creations- maybe golf balls with solid cores (they work good on muzzlelaoder ramrods).

Yes, they are a close fit. I also use Lee size dies to remove excess lube and lap them to what I need.
But I do not worry about wiping boolits even if some is on the nose. I just wipe the brass after crimping. Makes a mess in dies sometimes but I like lube on boolits rather then dry. You would not dare dump my boolits in an auto feed on a progressive! GLOB! :bigsmyl2:

You could also use a short section of copper, alum or brass pipe, often found on hardware stores. A 7/16" ID would work fine. A fired case also works. You could probably use a 45colt case, the ID isn't much bigger.

I just used a .44 mag case with the rim cut off., and glued it into a handle that had a hole drilled all the way through it. It worked great for the time I used it. Doubt if I could even find it now.

I kept watchin Ebay and finally got all the Lee cookie cutters I needed. I know you can make em but I got lazy.

When I was pan lubing, I got an old golf club shaft and dropped a boolit into it (they're tapered) then ran a dowel down behind the boolit to measure where to cut it off at. I used a small tubing cutter and cut the shaft. I de-burred it and could shove this over the lubed boolit time and time again. Would get some wax on the nose from shoving against the previous boolit but wipe it off on an old towel and load 'er up. Still have some scrounged shafts if you need one.
BTW, you can make another caliber with the cutoff piece.

The golf club shaft sounds like an excellent idea!
Cut them all up, I can't stand that game anyway- a waste of good farm land, if you ask me.
The only other good use for the clubs, are pot passers! :lol:

Here is one I made. I have since put a piece of half round on it for a push piece and an end to a piece of dowel to knock the bullets lose. It is a 45-70 case with the primer pocket drilled out with a 16D nail as the ejector.http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm243/Evansguns/102_2118.jpg

Got the shaft at Goodwill, cut it and found that it was very thick material and even inside diameter at the top of the shaft was too small. My wife looked at the cut up golf club and looked like she was going to ask, but changed her mind.

Then I remembered that I had purchased a golf club ten years ago (just so I could try out driving balls) and found it in the garage. It is now a kake cutter that holds probably 25 boolits before they start popping out of the top.
