You may want to get a frame mounted red dot. The ones mounted on the slide get beat up a fair amount. At least if you put it on the frame it doesn't need go back and forth for every round fired and the dot kind of stays put. There is nothing wrong with a dot sight.. lots of people young and old use them..

MAn you have to do what you have to do. It may not look aestethically pleasing but hey if it works and keep you out there shooting then it is worth it. LEt me know how it works out on the 1911.
Damned bifocals I have makes sights blurry or tilted depending on where I place my check. SO I will probably be investigating alternative sights soon also.
That is a beautiful rifle!

Duke, have you considered - or tried - the Merit suction cup optical sight? It sticks on your glasses and swivels into place for shooting or out of the way when not shooting. The built-in adjustable iris allows the shooter to vary the hole size to sharpen the image..... much like using a peep sight does. An elderly man I knew in England used one and it was rare that I beat him with a pistol... and I was a pretty fair pistol shot then.

FWIW, I'm seriously considering one myself. I'm 66 and my eyes aren't what they used to be. It's either a peep sight or scope or I might as well save my ammo!

Duke Nukem;
I converted to Red Dot sights on my revolvers and autos a couple of years ago. I lost most of the vision in my right eye (I am right handed) so had to convert to the left eye right handed shooting. Actually, in a couple of range sessions, I was back up to speed. I am shooting like I was young again. VERY, VERY satisfying.

If anyone complains, tell them to STICK IT! You'll LOVE that red dot.

Good luck!

Yup! And it will really sink in when some grade school kid comes around to ask you first hand info about the olden days for his school history report, and puts your name down as a footnote. Nice gun though. I've got to agree that it's most likely a lot better than some sort of scope or red-dot. Kind of reminds you of the old time sights they used to put on 32 specials around the turn of the 20th century--only a little bigger.

Whatever keeps you shooting--that's the ticket. I am older than dirt, at least that is how one young fellow worker put it over fifteen years ago when I retired. I am on the verge of having to go in the same direction myself and as long as I can still shoot, the young purists won't factor into the equation. Sooner or later, they too will have to cross the same river. Who knows, I may have firing ports put into my coffin. Take care and enjoy your shooting.

Two things come to mind. Thank God for modern technology and when people do this to classic lever guns.......angels weep. I have mixed feelings as my eyesight is failing more and more by the minute, and using the Braille shooting method doesn't appeal to me. If they would only come up with one of these designed to complement the lines of a levergun all would be well. Maybe they could build one in a brass tube so it would look like a vintage telescopic sight.

I only ever fired one clip through a 1911 with an aimpoint, didn't like the concept, but I'm sure if I persisted (or had to) I'd grow to like it.

With precision target pistol work I use a pair of cheap readers which focus sharpy on the front sight. This leaves the rar and target a bit blurry, but gets me personal bests score wise.

As for hunting, the set up above would be hard to beat and reversible. I'll have to try one one day and see what the fuss is all about. They would allow me to use my 92s in 25/20 and 32/20 for small game I suppose, which is borderline at the moment. I am very fortunate, I don't wear glasses and can read most things when the light is good. It on;y gets worse from here. :(

Yes sir. Thanks to technology I'll still be able to shoot.

How much are they Duke?

What they should do is offer one case hardened. Now THAT would look cool.

That one 86 of yours with the tiger looking grain is interesting. I don't think I've ever seen grain like that on a rifle. It looks like the blank was flat sawn. It would be interesting to see how the grain runs under the but pad.

No offense meant. You wouldn't believe the ribbing I got when I put a laser on my 336. It made it a lot handier for shooting coyotes sneaking into the calf's pen at night. I called it the Verminator. Too bad it's illegal for deer.

By the way, I have now replaced my beloved Williams "peepsight" with a fixed power scope, so I understand KAINTSEENOMORE disease.

Dale53
12-22-2009, 07:33 PM
You'll sometimes find that the Red Dot has better definition if your glasses are correct (for distant vision). On my good vision days, my Red Dot is sharply defined. When I have a bad vision day, my Red Dot looks a bit like a comma. However, even tho' it is blurred I seem to shoot about as well as when it is sharply defined.

As they say, "Go figure"...

The wood on that gun is lustfully delicious. The reddot is not terribly obtrusive, if you're open to some constructive criticism, I would suggest taking a Sharpie to the white lettering on the optic. Not so bad from a few feet off, but the white seems to stand out to my eye. I'm not saying it looks terrible, I just think toning down the white letters would help it to blend in a little more...
