I finally got a can of 5744, took a month. I started with 32 gr's and my 317 gr GC boolit. I hit center bull where I am sighted with the 4759 loads. Here are some group sizes at 50 yd's. I only loaded 3 of each to conserve boolits and powder.
32 gr's=1" 33=2-1/2" 34=2-1/16" 35= 2" 36=1-11/16" 37=1-1/2" 38=7/8" 39=1-9/16" 40=1-3/16".
Every load hit center until I got to 38 gr's and the group hit 1-3/4" high. This is where a recoil increase started to be felt. 39 and 40 gr's hit 3-1/4" high.
With the lighter loads I was getting some unburned powder out of the cases. This went away as I increased the charges.
Next is to try 37.5, 38 again, 38.5 and work up to 42 gr's. I had no pressure signs and brass fell out. Then I will try some Dacron over the best loads. When done I will chronogaph the best.
Hoping for 3/4" or under.

No luck so far! I went to 42 gr's today. From 40.5, groups got larger with a lot of fliers. One sticky case with 41 gr's, none with 41.5 and 42. Just a little snug. A little unburned powder from each case.
I shot a good group at 100 yd's with my old load of 4759.
Next I have to try the heavier boolit with 5744.

You really don't need the dacron with 5744 but I know you'll have to try it anyway. Let us know what the results are. I use 5744 all the time in my Buffalo Classic using 500 gr. 1881-style bullets. It's dirty but accurate and not position sensitive... my favorite .45-70 powder.

I think it will work better with the heavier boolit that weighs 378 gr's. Yeah, goofy weight because I made the mould. I only have a 10" barrel.
