Has anyone made a universal top punch by modifing a top punch? I cast many different size/style bullets and it would be nice to have a "universal" top punch.

The Star uses a flat punch and the bullets are fed into the die nose first. What brand of lubrisizer are you using?

A Universal top punch in reality is not practical because a top punch small enough for 22's is too small for the 45's and viseversa.

I just tried coating the top punch with glue from a hot glue stick. So far its working after 30 bullets

Some use epoxy and lube the bullet first to to prevent it from sticking to make the cast. Some top punches will work on mulitple bullets like the flat point ones and some will work in a pinch depending on ho fussy you are about you bullets. A small even mark doesn't bother me especially on pistol bullets.

For anything with a flat nose in 38 a 495 works for me , it has a very shallow lip on the edge.

For 44s i use a 421 & hot glue , then i made a flat one but ya gotta pay attention when ya line em up in the die!!!

Since most of my bullets are flat nosed, I use a cut off bolt for the top punch.

I use a flat top punch for all my handgun boolits except HP's. The flat punch does make a small flat on round nose boolits, but sure doesn't hurt anything.

I keep my press adjusted so the die center pin doesn't come all the way out; the boolit is aligned from the base rather than by the top punch.
