I have been Re-Ferb'ing some old, VERY Rusty Lyman molds. I have used electro chemical cleaning, followed by solvent soaks/scrubs (With Brass brushes).

Some are to the point of trial casting before final finishing.

Problem: Some of the molds seem to have been very porous as they keep letting the solvent out long after they are to casting temp. This seems to be more of a problem with the single cavity molds than the 4 cavities.

Other than oven baking them to drive out the solvent, any other suggestions??

Thanks in advance,

felix

Fill the pores with moly powder. Use a hard stick, such as an osage orange cuticle stick stolen from wife, to burnish in the powder. Shake excess back into a shiny plate for reuse. The mold is now completely protected against rust when stoked under realistic dormancy. ... felix

Soak em in denatured alky or acetone for a few miniutes, let em dry, then cook em in the oven at 300 for about 10 min. repeat as necessary. Once or 2wice oughta do it.

Boil them with a little squirt of dish soap.
