This rifle is for sale locally. The other posted pictures show a nice original 1895 rifle. The sale includes dies and other extras for $400.... too rich for my blood this close to Christmas.

However, I'm wondering if it's one of the South African contract rifles or simply a run-of-the-mill Chilean Mauser in the "C" block.

He does have all the goodies to go with it though. [smilie=w:

No, it is not a South African 1895. The side-rail is a standard Mauser Chileno Modelo 1895. Its an antique Ludwig Loewe rifle. If the rest looks like what is shown in the photo its worth $400.

The South African 1895 have a generic siderail address. Has no model designation or country name.

Looks like a nice rifle, though. The Chilean 1895 doesn't get the attention it deserves. The upper end rifles are every bit the rifle the 1896 Swedish Mauser is. The Vee sights suck canal water but the quality & workmanship is second to none.

Thanks Dutch. That confirms what I was thinking and I agree completely about the quality of the 1895's. Old World craftsmanship at it's finest.
